Description

Title: Respiratory Care Practitioner - Full Time

Job Summary: The Respiratory Care Practitioner (RCP) provides care to patients with pulmonary deficiencies and abnormalities. Assesses, plans, implements, and evaluates respiratory care. Coordinates patient care within the medical plan of care in conjunction with physician orders and department/hospital guidelines. Care for patients from neonates to geriatrics. Contributes to department operations and communications in alignment with the mission, vision, and values of Pipeline Health, and upholds AIDET (Acknowledge, Introduce, Duration, Explanation, Thank you) patient communication.

Essential Functions:

  • Manages artificial airways.
  • Documents care, patient condition, and observations using appropriate forms.
  • Performs respiratory assessments and makes recommendations based on findings.
  • Performs ventilator weaning parameters and makes recommendations based on results.
  • Notifies physician of significant changes in patient condition.
  • Administers aerosolized liquids and medications.
  • Monitors oxygen therapy.
  • Performs spirometry, including incentive spirometry, peak flows, VC, and FVC.
  • Delivers intermittent positive pressure breathing (IPPB) therapy.
  • Operates and maintains respiratory equipment as listed in the equipment book.
  • Implements emergency measures for life-threatening emergencies.
  • Maintains basic knowledge of cardiology.
  • Operates and maintains ventilators, including BiPAP.
  • Assists with C-sections and infant ventilator setup.
  • Draws blood gases and interprets results.
  • Changes tracheostomy tubes and troubleshoots related issues.
  • Performs EKGs.
  • Communicates clearly and professionally with coworkers, patients, and all customers.
  • Uses SBAR in communication with oncoming shift, physicians, and other services.
  • Speaks up to stop the line and escalate safety concerns as needed.
  • Completes monthly training and may float to other hospital areas as needed.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Experience:

  • Prior experience as a respiratory care practitioner; new graduates from accredited programs may be considered with training.
  • Critical thinking, service excellence, strong interpersonal skills, and PC/computer proficiency.
  • Ability to learn, synthesize, make critical judgments, work independently, and collaborate with leadership teams.

Licensure/Certifications:

  • Current Respiratory Care Practitioner (RCP) for the state of California, required.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) from American Heart Association, required.
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) from American Heart Association, required.
  • Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) from American Heart Association, required.
  • AB508 Workplace Violence Prevention (4 hour) due within 30 days.

Other Certifications:

  • Management of Assaultive Behavior (MAB 1 or MAB 2), Crisis Prevention Intervention (CPI) or other certification covering AB508 and SB1299.

Education:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Respiratory Therapy or Cardiovascular Technology from an accredited institution.

Blood Gas Experience:

  • For Blood Gas: at least one year of laboratory training or experience, or both.

Alternative Education:

  • Or an Associate degree related to pulmonary function from an accredited institution; or two years of laboratory training or experience in blood gas analysis.

All foreign degrees: must be accompanied by a confirmation letter certifying US equivalence.

Grandfather Clause: Staff hired prior to December 28, 2024 remain qualified if continuously employed after that date.
