Job Description Summary:

Oversees Respiratory Care operations within assigned programs. Provides expert clinical guidance and ensures delivery of initiatives. Plans, collaborates, implements, and evaluates the administrative, supervisory, and direct care activities for assigned program team. Oversees the clinical operations, clinical competencies, scope of practice, staff development, and regulatory compliance to ensure assessment, planning, provision, and evaluation of patient care. Provides leadership for complex programs by communicating goals and strategies, providing direction and priorities, and providing enthusiasm and support.

Job Description:

Essential Functions:

  • Collaborates in planning services and ensures they are delivered in accordance with established standards and within the scope of practice. Establishes operational strategies by evaluating trends and critical measurements, determining production, productivity, quality, and customer-service strategies, designing systems, accumulating resources, partnering to provide best outcomes, resolving problems, and implementing change.
  • Directs and evaluates the clinical practice, administrative, and supervisory activities of Respiratory Therapists within areas of responsibility. Determines accountabilities, communicates and enforces values, policies, and procedures, oversees the performance management and employment lifecycles, plans and reviews compensation strategies, and oversees assignment and scheduling.
  • Maintains a high level of clinical expertise in respiratory care and acts as a clinical consultant to respiratory care, nursing, and medical staff in the management of respiratory care clinical issues. Leads and participates on committees as a representative in Respiratory Care. Completes internal/external projects by serving on task force groups and committees.
  • Develops, evaluates, and communicates annual and long-range goals and objectives in collaboration with the multidisciplinary team.
  • Develops respiratory therapy services financial strategies by estimating, forecasting, and anticipating requirements, trends, and variances, aligning monetary resources, developing action plans, measuring and analyzing results, and minimizing the impact of variances.
  • Ensures maintenance of appropriate inventories of patient care supplies. Partners in evaluation of new technologies, equipment, and supplies. Maintains up-to-date knowledge of techniques and practices in the field of respiratory care by attending conferences, seminars, and other relevant meetings.
  • Maintains legal and accreditation compliance by developing policy positions concerning federal, state, and local regulations, and governmental standards. Anticipates emerging issues and leads teams to develop and implement evidence-based clinical programs, policies, and standards.
  • Assesses continuing education needs of clinical staff. Guides and encourages staff to utilize evidence-based research to ensure the highest level of care.
  • Collaborates to promote student learning experiences and to serve as a connection for networking and recruitment opportunities. Partners and promotes research activities related to pulmonary medicine and other activities as appropriate.
Education Requirement:

Master's Degree in Respiratory Therapy or a related field, required.

Licensure Requirement:

Registered Respiratory Therapist by the National Board for Respiratory Care (NBRC) with licensure to practice in the State of Ohio, required.

Certifications:

Certification in cardio-pulmonary resuscitation (CPR) with annual recertification, required.

Skills:

  • Strong analytical/quantitative and organizational skills required to implement and evaluate goals, policies, procedures, and services and to develop new programs; to develop and monitor budgets; to assess patients and ensure optimal patient care; and to participate in research related to pulmonary medicine.
  • Excellent communication, customer service, negotiation, interpersonal relationship, and written communications skills are required.
  • Skills in promoting multidisciplinary collaboration; ability to act as a facilitator and change agent required.
  • Effective interpersonal skills required in interactions with all levels of hospital.
  • High level of initiative, self-direction and accountability for actions required.
  • Supervisory and managerial skills required to plan, direct, and evaluate the work of respiratory care staff.
  • Establishes active role in state and national professional organizations.
  • Respiratory therapists are authorized to access the unit medication rooms or bedside medication drawers to retrieve medications they are authorized to administer.
Experience:
  • Three years of experience in direct patient care and management, required.
  • Experience with neonatal and pediatric respiratory care, preferred.
Physical Requirements:

Occasionally 1-33% of time (0.5-2.5 hours)

Climb stairs/ladders, driving, lifting greater than 100 lbs. With assistance, working with power tools, working with electricity.

Frequently 34-66% of time (2.6-5 hours)

Bend/twist, squat/kneel, sitting, flexing /extending of neck, reaching above shoulder, computer skills, exposure to biohazard waste, exposed to loud noises.

Continuously 67-100% of time (5.1-12 hours +)

Standing, walking, hand use: grasping, gripping, turning, repetitive hand/arm use, lifting up to 20 lbs, pushing/pulling up to 100 lbs assistance may be needed, audible speech, hearing acuity, vision-depth perception, color vision, vision-seeing far/near, vision-peripheral, problem solving skills, decision making skills, interpreting data, exposed to blood/bodily fluids, exposed to communicable diseases and/or pathogens, chemicals/medications, work with patient equipment, exposure to fumes/gases/vapors, work with machinery.
