Position Summary:

Sovah Martinsville is seeking a Respiratory Therapist PRN Tier IV to examine patients with breathing-related conditions and conduct diagnostic testing. Consult with physicians to develop and implement a treatment plan for the patient. Performs physiotherapy and other treatments and teaches patients to use medications.

Measures lung capacity and analyzes blood samples using a blood gas analyzer. DragEditDelete Delivers and assesses response to ordered therapy per plan of care. Monitors, records, and communicates patient condition as appropriate. DragEditDelete Evaluates respiratory care policies and procedures based on patient outcomes, current research, and best practices. DragEditDelete Responds to codes and calls for emergent assistance. Assesses patient condition and delivers appropriate treatment. DragEditDelete Educates the patient and family about the patient's illness and provides information about community support groups and other resources. DragEditDelete Monitors, receives, stocks, and distributes respiratory care supplies and medical gas cylinders. DragEditDelete Maintains storage areas with required supply levels and equipment. DragEditDelete Disassembles, cleans, and sterilizes equipment, and performs preventative maintenance and calibration of machines. DragEditDelete Provides diagnostic and therapeutic interventions on physician-prescribed patients with acute and chronic cardio-pulmonary dysfunction, utilizing state-of-the-art procedures and bio-medical equipment.

DragEditDelete Coordinates and participates in the administration of medical gas therapy, humidity therapy, aerosol therapy, NT, ETT, tracheostomy suctioning, and tracheostomy care. Chest physical therapy, hyperinflation therapy, treatments, and the administration of medications used in respiratory care procedures in accordance with physicians' orders. DragEditDelete Performs twelve-channel electrocardiograph examinations.

Performs the more complex respiratory care procedures to include calibrating , setting up and monitoring of mechanical ventilators, blood gas analyzers, Bronchoscopy equipment and pulse oximeters.

Evaluates, initiates, monitors, and weans patients from mechanical ventilation.

Performs Holter Monitoring set-up, instruction, and analysis.

Performs Event Recorder set-up, instruction, and data collection.

Participates as a member of the cardiac Arrest Team responding to emergency or STAT calls to establish natural and artificial airways, including oro/naso endotracheal intubations.
DragEditDelete Provides clinical instruction on the proper use of equipment to hospital staff and patients; makes rounds with physicians to discuss preferred treatment methods for individual patients.

Sets up and performs arterial catheterization. Monitor and troubleshoot hemodynamic equipment.

Participates in the routine maintenance of equipment; makes periodic rounds to ensure proper functioning of bio-medical equipment.

Transport patients requiring manual ventilatory support or supplemental oxygen to various locations within the hospital or to other hospitals.

Assists in the orientation and training of new personnel.

Performs simple portable spirometry.

Post charges into the hospital information system.

Participates in the department's Quality Assurance Program.

Participates in preoperative and post-operative evaluations of patients. Minimum Education:
  • Graduate of an approved Respiratory Care Program, with an A.A.S. degree, c ertification of Graduation, or equivalent.

  • Requires critical thinking skills, decisive judgment, and the ability to work with minimal supervision.
  • Must be able to work in a stressful environment and take appropriate action.
  • Requires full range of body motion, including handling and lifting patients, manual dexterity, and eye and hand coordination. Requires standing, walking, stooping, and stretching. Occasionally lifts, carries, and pushes items weighing up to 100 lbs. (Mechanical ventilators, electrocardiographs, stretchers, and patient care carts). Requires corrected vision and hearing to normal range. Requires working under stressful conditions, extended shifts.

  • AHA Basic Life Support (BLS) required.

  • Licensed by the Commonwealth of Virginia to practice as a Respiratory Care Practitioner. Certification by the American Heart Association in Basic Life Support.
  • Registered by the National Board for Respiratory Care (CRT) or (RRT) required.
DragEditDelete Minimum Work Experience:
Tier II - V
Minimum 18 months of RRT hospital experience
Minimum 36 months of CRT hospital experience
Tier IV - 3 shifts per week - $50 an hour
