Job summary

The Washington Research Library Consortium, Inc (VIVA) seeks a Resource Sharing and Acquisitions Librarian to lead its resource sharing programs and support renewals and acquisitions for shared resources across Virginia’s academic libraries.

Reporting to the Associate Director, you will advance statewide resource sharing capabilities through cross-institution coordination, engagement with members, and strategic analysis of needs, ensuring responsive services for Virginia’s higher education

Resource Sharing and Acquisitions Librarian

Summary

VIVA, the academic library consortium of 70 nonprofit academic libraries in the Commonwealth of Virginia, provides, in an equitable, cooperative and cost-effective manner, enhanced access to library and information resources for Virginia’s higher education community. A dynamic organization serving community colleges and research organizations alike, VIVA members include all 39 state-assisted (public) colleges and universities, as well as 30 independent (private, nonprofit) institutions, and the Library of Virginia. Since 1994, VIVA has worked to empower its member libraries through collaborative collection development, resource sharing, open and affordable initiatives, community development, and shared central infrastructure. About the Position:

Reporting to the Associate Director, the Resource Sharing and Acquisitions Librarian leads VIVA's resource sharing programs and supports the renewal and acquisitions processes for the consortium's shared resources. Working with central staff and member libraries across the Commonwealth, the position advances the resource sharing capabilities of VIVA member libraries and supports collaborative initiatives that empower Virginia's academic libraries. Through strategic analysis of statewide needs, member engagement, and cross-institutional coordination, this position ensures that VIVA's resource sharing programs are responsive to the needs of Virginia's academic library community.

Responsibilities:

Resource Sharing

• Serves as the primary VIVA support to its resource sharing community, including standing committees, task forces, working groups, and advisory bodies;
• With the Associate Director, researches, evaluates, and supports the licensing of services and subscriptions that advance resource sharing capabilities across Commonwealth institutions. Leads the evaluation and communication of the programmatic impacts of resource sharing initiatives within VIVA; and
• Takes a proactive approach to problem-solving in a distributed environment.

Product Renewals

• In consultation with the E-Resources Librarian and the Digital Publishing Librarian, manages the standard renewal and acquisitions process for shared consortial products as well as opt-in subscriptions in a variety of electronic formats by member libraries, ensuring that annual subscriptions and purchases are accurate and completed in a timely manner.

Program Initiatives

• Contributes to the broader work of VIVA initiatives and task force activities across member libraries, as appropriate, including planning and executing other VIVA-sponsored conferences and events;
• Leads the planning of VIVA's annual Interlibrary Loan Community Forum;
• Implements project management frameworks for committee and program initiatives; and
• Supports the continued development of a distributed shared collection for the Commonwealth.

Strategic Communication

• Monitors issues, trends, and best practices in resource sharing and acquisition processes within the higher education landscape;
• Stays current with resource sharing trends and communicates relevant developments to the consortium; and
• Contributes to the broader professional dialogue on behalf of VIVA.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

• Master’s degree from an ALA-accredited library and information science program, OR a master's degree in a related field, OR a certified foreign equivalent;
• Experience managing resource-sharing workflows in an academic, government, or consortial library environment;
• Ability to organize, prioritize, and manage competing deadlines, with flexibility and adaptability, in a distributed work environment;
• Demonstrated ability to build collaborative and mutually beneficial working relationships with people of varying backgrounds, across institutions and roles;
• Ability to communicate complex information clearly and effectively, in writing and verbally, to varied audiences including committees, member libraries, and vendors; and
• Ability to travel regularly to VIVA meetings and to attend conferences and meetings representing VIVA.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Experience working with library systems, library vendors, or in a consortial environment, or comparable professional experience;
• Experience troubleshooting resource sharing or acquisitions issues;
• Experience with project management in academic, government, or consortial library settings;
• Considerable experience in academic libraries with increasing responsibility;
• Experience with library consortia and resource sharing operations;
• Record of professional engagement and contributions to the library profession through presentations, publications, committee leadership, or professional service;
• Leadership experience managing cross-institutional projects or teams;
• Knowledge of acquisitions workflows in academic libraries;
• Demonstrated ability to evaluate program effectiveness and communicate impact to varied stakeholders;
• Understanding of consortial interlibrary loan programs and library sharing technologies; and
• Demonstrated ability to work independently while maintaining effective collaboration, communication, and accountability in a distributed or hybrid work environment.

The anticipated hiring range for this position is $80,000 to $90,000.The final salary and professional ranking for a selected candidate will be determined based on factors such asthequalifications of the individual, including their work experience, scholarship, and service;internal equity; and alignment with the university's approved pay structures.
