Overview

This position provides assistive care to patients. The incumbent facilitates the efficient delivery of patient care, supports the professional role of the licensed staff, and provides support and assistance as directed by licensed staff in rendering basic healthcare to the patient. This position also assists with clerical functions as a multi-skilled auxiliary worker. It may involve accessing and administering medications within the scope of practice and according to state law.

Responsibilities
  1. Prepares patients for examinations and diagnostic procedures according to clinic procedures such as recording temperatures, pulse rate, blood pressure, and responses to standardized medical history questions.
  2. Reports all observed patient concerns and changes in condition to a licensed staff member.
  3. Performs Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA) Waved Lab tests as identified by the department and reports results to the appropriate personnel.
  4. Performs skills such as suture removal, straight catheterization, and injections (IM, Subq, and intra-dermal).
  5. Acts as a chaperone during patient examinations and assists with procedures.
  6. Monitors and cleans examination rooms, reports outdated supplies, restocks items, and reports equipment issues.
  7. Answers calls, forwards messages, and schedules appointments and tests under licensed staff supervision.
  8. Assists with clerical tasks like filing, retrieving medical records, and entering charges.
  9. Completes mandatory training on infection prevention, safety, CPR, and equipment use.
  10. May perform patient phlebotomy after specialized training.
  11. May assist with diagnostic procedures such as EKG and ultrasound under supervision.
  12. Provides educational materials and health information to patients and families.
  13. Assists with patient transportation as directed.
  14. May instruct in Basic Life Support (BLS) and perform IV access.
  15. Performs other duties as assigned by the department.
Knowledge / Skills / Abilities
  • Ability to perform essential job functions.
  • Effective communication and human relations skills.
  • Proficiency in clinic-specific skills within six weeks of hire.
  • Physical ability to stand for long periods, move and lift patients, and handle equipment.
Qualifications

Required:

  • Completion of one of the following: State-approved EMT course, 1 year of MA experience, Medical Assisting program, or University Hospital MA certification.
  • Current RQI Healthcare Provider eCredential through University of Utah Health RQI system (within 30 days of hire).

Additional license requirements may be determined by the department.

Working Conditions and Physical Demands

Must be able to meet physical requirements including lifting up to 50 pounds, exposure to infectious materials, and working around potentially dangerous contaminants.
