Job Summary

Reporting to the Director, the Residential Night Advisor supports approximately 70 high school students from Belmont, Franklin, Lincoln, Sotomayor, and Wilson High Schools in the Los Angeles Unified School District during a 6-week summer educational program at Occidental College. The Residential Night Advisor involves overseeing students' safety, ensuring compliance with Upward Bound regulations, and providing guidance through overnight hall monitoring in assigned residence halls. The Residential Night Advisor is responsible for maintaining a secure and supportive environment to foster students' academic and personal growth.

Job Duties

  • 40% - Administrative - Instruct students on emergency procedures and assist in implementing crisis management protocols and reporting. Collaborate with residential staff to ensure safety and health regulations are consistently monitored in the residence hall and across campus. Assist with administrative tasks and prepare materials for activities as needed. Communicate with the Assistant Director at the beginning and end of each shift, and promptly report incidents or policy violations, completing incident forms as required. - (Essential)
  • 30% - Supervision - Provide daily supervision for student participants throughout the program, including weekly reports and other required documentation. Support the enforcement of program policies, including silent study hours, curfew, and discipline standards set by the Project Director. Ensure the safety and well-being of students during overnight hours, including conducting room checks, monitoring the floor, and responding to emergencies when necessary. - (Essential)
  • 30% - Student Support/Advisement - Develop and lead activities to promote community-building within and outside the residence hall, both individually and as part of the RA team. Organize icebreakers and team-building activities to foster student engagement. Support students in their goals of pursuing higher education. Be available on-call 24 hours a day, five days a week. Perform other duties as assigned. - (Essential)

Minimum Qualifications

  • Currently enrolled in an associate or bachelor’s degree program.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint), Google drives/folders/forms, Adobe Acrobat, Web Editing, and social media applications or any combination of productivity programs applicable to position responsibilities.
  • Demonstrated ability to be detail-oriented and thorough; skilled at anticipating and preventing potential problems and handling a wide variety of tasks with efficiency and accuracy.
  • Strong commitment to a quality work product.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate verbally, in writing and electronically.
  • Effective interpersonal skills as evidenced in the ability to collaborate with a variety of constituencies.
  • Demonstrated commitment to justice, equity, inclusion & diversity.
  • Demonstrated skill in adapting to and performing work effectively in high-volume, high accountability, confidential environment with multiple and changing priorities.
  • Effective organizational, logistical, time management and planning skills with the ability to manage and prioritize multiple tasks/projects simultaneously, prioritize and fulfill the functions of an office in a timely manner.
  • Ability to self-motivate and work independently.
  • Ability to provide effective leadership and training, and to work effectively and professionally across functions, disciplines, levels, and with diverse groups.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Associate’s degree in education, Liberal Arts, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • One year of experience working with TRIO and Educational Equity Programs.
  • One year of experience working with low-income, first-generation, and underrepresented students in roles such as a tutor, teacher's aide, or counselor assistant.
  • One year of experience living and working in a college residential setting.
  • Applicants must be in good academic standing, with a cumulative GPA of 2.5 or higher, and maintain good standing at their current institution.

EXPECTED HIRING RANGE: $17.28/hr
