Job summary

Volunteers of America-Greater New York is seeking a part-time Residential Counselor for the Perth Amboy, NJ area. The role involves direct care, case management support, and crisis intervention as part of a treatment team.

The position requires a relevant degree or licensure as described, a valid driver’s license, and willingness to work Mon-Fri evenings 5-10pm. A strong commitment to serving vulnerable populations is essential.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in mental health, health or related human services field is required.
• RN or practical nurse license plus related experience is acceptable.
• High school diploma with related experience is acceptable.

Responsibilities

• On-site supervision or support for residents, including teaching, behavioral modeling, assisting with ADLs, and other tasks.
• Communicate observations about residents to the program manager, RN, DDD case manager and treatment team.
• Supervise and support recreational and social activities for residents.
• Provide transportation as needed.
• Assist residents in self-administration of medications.
• Provide residential counseling support.
• Crisis intervention services (excluding crisis counseling).
• Participate in development of individual habilitation plans and assessments.
• Collaborate on individual service coordination activities.
• Document observations and services in progress notes.

Education

Bachelor's degree in mental health or related field

RN license

Practical nurse license + 2 years related experience

High school diploma + 4 years related experience

We are currently seeking qualified candidates for the following position:

Position: Residential Counselor - PT

The Residential Counselor is responsible for assisting in the case management and treatment plan implementation for the consumers. The residential counselor provides direct care services to the consumers, including but not limited to transportation, support, teaching, crisis intervention, and case management.

Location:

Perth Amboy, NJ 08861 (Middlesex County)

Shift:

Evening/ 20 hours a week/ Monday- Friday 5- 10pm

Minimum Qualifications:

The position shall have one of the following:

• A bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in a mental health, health or other appropriate human services related discipline; a license as a registered nurse; a combination of one or more years of college, plus related work or life experience together equaling four years.
• The individual is required to have at least one year of related work or life experience if the four-year college degree does not meet the requirements above.
• A license as a practical nurse plus two years of related work or life experience or a high school diploma or the equivalent, plus four years of related work or life experience.
• This position shall also have a valid driver's license with a clean driving record for a minimum of 24 months.

Residential Counselor Principal Responsibilities:

1. On-site consumer resident supervision or support including but not limited teaching, behavioral modeling, assistance to complete ADL's, and other tasks.
2. Communicating observations and information about the consumer resident to the program manager, RN, DDD case manager and other treatment team members.
3. Supervising, organizing and supporting recreational and/or socialization activities for consumers.
4. Transportation
5. Assist consumers in the self-administration of medication.
6. Residential counseling
7. Crisis intervention services (but not including crisis intervention counseling)
8. Participation in the development of the individual habilitation plan and other required assessments.
9. Participation in individual service coordination activities.
10. Documenting observations, information and services provided to the consumer resident in progress notes.
11. Cooperate with Volunteers of America and/or State of New Jersey Division staff in any inspection and/or investigation.
