Responsibilities
- Functions as a member of the treatment team by assisting with the implementation of treatment services, including monitoring daily patient activities, assisting with direct client care, documentation, and orientation of clients to the unit.
- Demonstrates person-centered, strength-based communication and relationships with clients.
- Communicates effectively with staff, peers, and other professionals.
- Observes, documents, teaches, and responds to mental and physical health needs of clients.
- Serves as a residential counselor for a specified number of residents as directed.
- Creates a safe therapeutic milieu by fostering a culture of recovery.
- Implements treatment plans and documents progress/service notes accurately.
- Assists with the client admission process by completing all required documentation accurately.
- Searches clients and their belongings for contraband upon admission and as required.
- Assists clients with activities of daily living (ADLs), including personal hygiene, self-care skills, laundry, money management, symptom management, and conflict resolution.
- Ensures healthy menu planning, food shopping, and meal preparation through coordination and assistance.
- Monitors clients' medication, documentation, and assists with attending appointments.
- Maintains the residence on a daily basis, including chores and light housekeeping duties.
- Provides physical assistance and close supervision as required.
- Maintains compliance with regulations applicable to DMH, HUD, BSAS, and DPH.
- Leads skill development and/or other groups as assigned.
- Provides crisis intervention and support, monitoring client location and condition per program regulations.
- Performs program cleaning and clerical work as assigned.
- Notifies supervisor of any identified problems or deficiencies in the program.
- Reviews resident records and treatment plans for completeness and accuracy as assigned.
- Answers telephone in a professional manner while documenting all relevant information.
Qualifications Required
- Residential Counselor I: Minimum of a high school diploma/GED/HiSet required.
- Residential Counselor II: Requires a Bachelor's degree; preferably in psychology or human services.
- Driving Requirements:
- For Faith House, Beryl's House, and Orchard Street: Current valid US-Issued driver's license.
- For ACCS Division: Current valid US-issued driver's license and a registered, inspected, and insured automobile for work-related purposes.
- For MYR, Detox, TSS, CSS, CSU, and ATS: Driving is not a requirement.
Must be able to pass a CORI background check.For MYR, Beryl's House, Faith House, and Orchard Street: Must be able to pass a CORI and a DCF/CPS background check.Preferred Qualifications
- If working in a Substance Use Program, certification in addiction counseling or a minimum of two (2) years of experience in the substance abuse field.
- Previous human services experience.
- Understanding of addiction and recovery if working in a Substance Use Program.
