Job summary

Abraxas Youth & Family Services in Camden, NJ is seeking a Part-Time Residential Counselor to support residents, provide on-site supervision, and deliver recovery-focused mental health services. Join a mission-driven team dedicated to independence and well-being.

You will work 7:30 AM - 3:30 PM with a focus on safety, documenting progress, and coordinating with interdisciplinary staff. A bachelor's in a mental health field or equivalent experience, CPR/First Aid, and a valid driver's license are

Qualifications

  • Valid driver's license with a driving record that meets insurance requirements.
  • Bachelor's degree in a mental health, health, or human services-related field; or a combination of education and related work/life experience totaling four years; OR a license as an RN; OR a license as an LPN and two years of related work or life experience; OR a high school diploma/equivalent with four years of related work or life experience.
  • Ability to complete agency orientation and competency-based adult mental health rehabilitation training.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain CPR and First Aid certification.
  • Ability to read, write, speak, and communicate effectively in English.
  • Ability to successfully complete all mandatory training requirements.
  • Ability to utilize electronic and manual documentation systems.

Responsibilities

  • Provide on-site consumer supervision, therapeutic training, and functional assessments.
  • Promote a normalized environment that supports independence, wellness, and recovery.
  • Supervise and organize recreational, socialization, and community activities.
  • Provide transportation for appointments, shopping, and other community-based activities.
  • Perform residential counseling and crisis intervention services.
  • Deliver direct mental health rehabilitation services according to individualized treatment plans.
  • Document observations, services provided, and consumer progress.
  • Serve as a key member of the interdisciplinary treatment team and communicate with team members to ensure continuity of care.
  • Attend supervision sessions, case conferences, staff meetings, and required training programs. Maintain current clinical records and treatment documentation.
  • Ensure the safety, cleanliness, maintenance, and security of the residential facility.
  • Assist with grocery shopping, food preparation, food storage, and completion of household duties.
  • Participate on agency committees and task forces as assigned.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by management.

Education

Bachelor's degree in mental health/health/human services
RN license
LPN license with experience
High school diploma/equivalent with related experience

What You'll Do

As a Residential Counselor, you will:

Preferred
  • Experience working in behavioral health, residential services, or human services settings.
  • Experience supporting individuals with mental health needs.
  • Knowledge of recovery-oriented and person-centered approaches.
Schedule
  • Part-Time
  • 7:30 AM - 3:30 PM
  • Alternating Bi-Weekly Schedule
    • Week 1: Sunday, Friday, Saturday
    • Week 2: Sunday, Monday, Saturday
  • Weekend availability required.
Physical Requirements
  • Ability to stand, walk, bend, and assist residents as needed.
  • Ability to transport individuals safely to appointments and community activities.
  • Ability to perform essential job functions with or without reasonable accommodation.
