Overview

Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) has an opening for a Professional Engineer II with the Region 1, South Engineering team in Aurora. This residency is responsible for designing and preparing plans for projects which are professionally certified in accordance with Federal and State standards that are accurate, biddable and constructible. This unit also oversees and directs the work of construction contractors in the field building the projects, including inspecting, testing and measuring the work of the contractors and consultants to assure it is in accordance with the awarded contract.

The unit oversees and directs the work of construction contractors in the field and ensures project plans are designed and prepared to meet applicable standards. The residency may require sealing and stamping plans produced by the residency, which requires a registration as a licensed Professional Engineer with the State of Colorado.

About the Position

The Resident Engineer will be responsible for managing, guiding, and supervising a team of engineers, technicians, and others in the delivery of transportation related projects within Arapahoe and Douglas Counties. This includes engineering expertise and advice; monitoring and approving expenditures to assure they are within approved budgets; monitoring schedules to assure that established deadlines are met; coordinating and assigning work; assuring that unit employees are trained and have adequate resources to perform their duties; preparing performance and employee development plans and evaluating employees’ performance; and representing the Department in dealings with the public, outside entities, and the media. This also includes legal responsibility sealing and stamping plans produced by the residency, which requires a registration as a licensed Professional Engineer with the State of Colorado.

Responsibilities

Monitor and administer construction projects to certify that construction is being performed in accordance with plans and specifications under State and Federal requirements.
Monitor schedules to ensure that established deadlines are met.
Create, approve, review and supervise the preparation of modifications to design and construction contract documents.
Inspect project sites and features for safety compliance.
Resolve complex engineering problems to successfully complete projects within environmental and economic constraints.
Direct and manage all activities and personnel involved in the development of plans, specifications and estimates during the design of transportation projects.
Assure that designs comply with project scopes, schedules, budgets and current design engineering criteria, standards, practices, theory and procedures.
Review and supervise preliminary survey data for land boundaries, topography, right-of-way, drainage studies and horizontal and vertical control.
Analyze roadway and bridge design projects for potential problems; propose and implement design alternatives.
Monitor the financial status of all design, construction and other transportation projects to ensure that project costs are within approved budgets.
Approve and authorize expenditures of funds for general office administration, including the acquisition of supplies, equipment and services and the maintenance of facilities and equipment.
Participate in the selection of consultants.
Monitor the administration of consultant design, construction, construction engineering and environmental study contracts to ensure compliance; approve contract payments; create, review and approve modifications to contracts; monitor and review contractors’ monthly progress reports and billings services; and resolve contractor disputes and claims to ensure timely project completion within budgetary constraints.
Responsible for staffing and supervision of a work unit including assigning staff to projects, developing schedules using project management software, conducting performance appraisals, interviewing candidates and making hiring recommendations, approving timesheets and leave, resolving personnel issues, recommending corrective and disciplinary actions and determining/recommending employee training.
Represent the work unit and CDOT by participating in/or conducting meetings with the public, other governmental agencies, contractors and the media; represent CDOT on task forces and citizen advisory committees associated with complex and politically controversial projects; explain CDOT’s actions related to project design, development or construction activities; serve on various internal CDOT committees.
Abide by all safety regulations, policies, and procedures and wear all required personal protective equipment.
