Collins has an opening for a Resident Engineer in our Salt Lake City, Utah, office. The primary responsibility of this role is to lead large‑scale construction projects working with UDOT. The Resident Engineer is an integral part of the construction management team. Responsibilities of the position are to perform inspection of construction activities to document conformance to plans and specifications, sample/test materials, document contract quantities, manage other inspection staff, and ensure high quality construction for transportation projects.

Typical Duties and Responsibilities
  • Responsible for monitoring contractor conformance to quality, performance, and specifications for assigned construction activities.
  • Proactively interacts with the contractor and communicates decisions to the Project Manager.
  • Reviews, analyzes, and resolves issues related to construction activities.
  • Performs complex engineering computations involving conventional engineering practices.
  • Produces complete engineering plans or reports.
  • Reviews contractor schedules (Primavera and Gantt charts).
  • Develops, documents, and implements contract modifications.
  • Maintains active involvement in technical societies.
  • Prepares engineering papers and presentations.
  • Assists in coordinating project submittals, cost control, scheduling, reporting, and document control activities.
  • Develops and tracks project activities relating to cost, specifications, changes, and schedule.
  • Plans, schedules, conducts, and/or coordinates detailed phases of assigned project work.
  • Regularly communicates with clients.
  • Attends meetings or events outside of normal working hours, as required.
  • Performs and monitors daily field inspections and maintains inspection records.
  • Performs field work as required, which may include nights and weekends.
  • Directs and supervises the work of other engineers, technicians, drafters, and administrative staff.
  • Actively observes and acts in an appropriate manner related to safety.
  • Ensures that staff needing specialized training in health and safety procedures and practices receives such training and that safety is discussed as an important aspect of their work.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
