Job summary

Masonicare at Mystic in Connecticut is seeking a Resident Care Assistant on a per diem basis. You will support residents with daily living activities, personal care, dining, and mobility, under licensed nursing supervision.

The role emphasizes dignity, respect and person-centered care in a team environment. Responsibilities include assisting with ADLs, IADLs, light housekeeping, monitoring health status, and participating in activity programs.

Qualifications

• Must hold CT CNA certification; CPR certification preferred.
• 1 year CNA experience preferred.

Responsibilities

• Assist residents with activities of daily living and personal care to maximize independence.
• Assist with instrumental activities of daily living and light housekeeping, laundry, dining support, and errands as needed.
• Provide medication cueing assistance for self-administration of medications.
• Monitor health status, observe changes, and report to licensed nurses as needed.
• Participate in resident-centered activity programs and assist with emergency preparedness.

Summary of Position:

Under the direction and supervision of a licensed nurse, assists residents with activities of daily living and personal care to maximize independence, freedom of choice and quality of life. Understands the Mission, Vision and Values of Masonicare

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

1. Provides assistance with essential activities of daily living and personal care to residents based on age, needs and abilities of the resident:
   • bathing;
   • dressing and undressing;
   • ambulating;
   • toileting;
   • assistance with meals and nourishment's;
   • personal hygiene (shaving, dental hygiene, nail, hair and foot care);
   • transferring using proper body mechanics and appropriate assistive devices; and
   • care of ADL devices such as eyeglasses and hearing aids
2. Provides assistance with instrumental activities of daily living to residents based on age, needs and abilities of the resident:
   • placing and/or receiving telephone calls;
   • performing light housekeeping tasks such as vacuuming, emptying trash, cleaning bathroom, bed making and bed changes;
   • assisting with laundry;
   • escorting the resident and coordinating internal transportation needs;
   • assisting with mail delivery and correspondence
3. Medication Assistance:
   • assists the resident with self-administration of medications, through cueing only
4. Health Maintenance and Monitoring Tasks:
   • observes and reports changes in the residents' physical condition and cognitive/emotional status to ALSA Licensed Nurses as needed;
   • conducts room checks on resident rounds;
   • monitors for environmental safety hazards;
   • records incidents, errors or accidents;
   • records resident and resident related events
5. Dining:
   • assists in a variety of tasks related to dining (escorting residents, set-up and clean-up, serving meals)
6. Activity Program:
   • responsible for participating in and supporting the resident centered activity program
7. Emergency Preparedness:
   • responds to and acts appropriately in emergency or disaster situations
8. Performs other duties as required.

Leadership:

• is a resident advocate at all times;
• follows Masonicare policy concerning confidentiality;
• plans and completes duties with minimal direction from supervisor;
• works collaboratively with colleagues;
• uses tactful, diplomatic communication in potentially sensitive or emotionally charged situations;
• follows up with appropriate staff, resident or others regarding reported complaints, problems and concerns;
• acts as ambassador to guest and other off-campus visitors; and
• maintains certifications required for employment

Administrative:

• completes required written documentation concerning resident care and activities during shift

Other Duties:

• demonstrates an appreciation of the heritage, values and wisdom of the residents and an understanding of the aging process;
• attends and participates in staff, educational and committee meetings to update knowledge, techniques, guidelines and regulations;
• assists with quality assurance programs; and
• assists with orientation and training of new staff

Minimum Qualifications:

Education: Post High School Vocational / Specialized Training

Experience: 1 year of CNA experience preferred

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations: Current State of Connecticut CNA certificate; CPR Certification preferred. Valid CT Driver's License

Ability to interact with all types of individuals; Ability to handle multiple tasks and meet individual resident care needs; Ability to read resident care plans, document resident condition and enter data onto appropriate logs/forms or enter information into computer database
