Job Description

In addition to promoting community, offering academic help, and keeping an eye on residents’ safety and security, the primary goals of the resident assistant role are to improve the quality of life in the residence halls. An individual with the flexibility to take on many tasks in response to the evolving requirements of students is needed for the position. Having strong interpersonal skills and the ability to manage administrative tasks are essential. The RA is more than simply a kind presence; they are a vital component in fostering an atmosphere where students gain self-reliance and learn how to coexist peacefully with others.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Community development—foster a supportive and inclusive living environment by building community, facilitating engagement, and promoting student well-being through programs, mentorship, and peer connections.
    • Cultivate a welcoming and inclusive community within the assigned building/area.
    • Plan and implement social, educational, and cultural programs that meet the diverse needs and interests of residents.
    • Encourage resident involvement and participation in hall activities and campus events.
    • Facilitate open communication and promote respectful interactions among residents.
    • Mediate conflicts and address interpersonal issues that arise within the community.
  • Resource and education—serve as knowledgeable resources, providing residents with information, guidance, and educational programming to support personal development, academic success, and overall well-being within the residence halls.
    • Serve as a positive role model and mentor for residents.
    • Provide guidance and support to residents navigating academic, social, and personal challenges.
    • Be knowledgeable about campus resources and refer residents to appropriate support services (e.g., counseling, academic advising, health center).
    • Conduct regular one-on-one and group meetings with residents to build relationships and provide support.
    • Assist residents in their transition to college life and promote student success.
  • Administrative and Operational Duties—RAs are required to complete weekly reports and other department paperwork, administer surveys and assist with check-ins and check-outs of residents and other duties assigned by the Residence Life Professional Staff.
    • Complete administrative tasks accurately and in a timely manner (e.g., incident reports, program proposals, room condition reports).
    • Report and follow up on maintenance requests.
    • Attend mandatory training sessions and staff meetings.
    • Maintain accurate records and documentation.
    • Manage bulletin boards and other communication mediums for the floor/area.
    • Participate in opening and closing procedures of the residence halls.
    • Perform duty responsibilities as assigned, including nights and weekends.
  • Policy enforcement/safety—RAs are attentive to resident safety and hall security, as well as ensure residents follow University and housing policies to maintain a respectful environment. RAs educate residents on their actions and decisions while informing them about how their actions impact an entire community.
    • Enforce university and residence hall policies and procedures.
    • Conduct regular rounds to ensure the safety and security of the building.

    • Respond to emergencies and crises according to established protocols.
  • Emergency response—RAs provide the primary response to emergencies within their block/hall.

    • Provide support and assistance to residents during crisis situations.
    • Maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive information with discretion.
Requirements

The RA position requires a commitment of 20 hours per week. External engagements must not interfere with RA responsibilities.

Residence Life seeks candidates who enjoy working in a community setting and fostering a living-learning community.

Applicants must:

  • Be enrolled for a minimum of 12 credit hours at UVI .
  • Have a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5 or higher to apply for and retain the position.
  • Have lived in on-campus housing for at least two semesters.
Applications will not be accepted or interviews scheduled for anyone not meeting the above criteria.
  • Resident Assistants receive an award valued between:
    • $7,990 (suite-style rooms in West Hall + Meal Plan A + $500),
    • $7,990 (double rooms in South and East Halls),
    • $6,490 (single rooms in North and Middle Halls) +
    • $40 laundry card.

Time Commitment

The nature of the RA position is such that its responsibilities are determined not so much by a time clock or a calendar but by the needs of residents. Some periods, such as training, opening, and closing, will require more time than average, but other responsibilities will arise that cannot always be anticipated and scheduled. Key time commitments include:

  • Desk shift—All RAs work a weekly three-hour desk shift as part of the RA position.
  • Duty—Each RA will have a weekly duty night. Duty entails staying in the hall to be accessible, walking the building to do security checks, and responding to any issue, incident, or need. In addition, the staff is expected to share duty responsibilities over break time when the halls remain open (Thanksgiving, Spring Break, MLK weekend, Easter, etc.).
  • Opening, closing, and breaks—RAs serve a facility role in getting the halls ready to open and closing them down for breaks and at the end of the school year. As such, RAs arrive early and depart late at Thanksgiving, winter, fall and spring recesses, as well as stay two days after the halls close in April.
  • RA training—In the fall, staff arrive two weeks before new students move in. The training schedule runs from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. and includes evening responsibilities for prepping the hall. A shorter version of the training also happens in January.
Fall Training: August 2025
  • Regular meetings—Meetings include weekly staff meetings (two hours) and weekly and one-on-one meetings with Residence Life Professional Staff (when requested).
  • Weekends away—RAs are eligible to request weekends and nights away with the approval of the Residence Life Director. Kindly note that prior notice must be given. Special permissions will be granted for exceptional circumstances.
