Job Summary:

The Residency Clinical Director at La Clinica de la Raza, will be responsible for supervising clinical care and training for pediatric dental residents. In this role, they will oversee all aspects of pediatric dentistry practice, including examinations, preventive care, restorations, extractions, behavior management, and basic orthodontics, while coordinating with an interdisciplinary team of dentists and physicians. The Residency Clinical Director will provide clinical oversight, instruction, and mentorship to residents, including managing sedation and anesthesia programs, and ensuring accurate documentation of clinical services. Additionally, they will collaborate with NYU Langone to implement educational objectives, contribute to didactic training, and support scholarly research and career development for residents. Overall, the position aims to enhance pediatric dental education and expand experiential learning opportunities at La Clinica de la Raza, with the goal of improving oral health outcomes for underserved children in California.

Major Areas of Responsibility, include but are not limited to:

Supervisory Responsibilities:

  • The Residency Clinical Director will be responsible for the daily oversight, instruction, clinical training, and evaluation of pediatric dental trainees at La Clinica de La Raza Oakland/Vallejo/Union City.
  • As needed, the Residency Clinical Director will provide oversight of the didactic training in pediatric dentistry and mentorship in scholarly research and job placement for pediatric dentists.
  • The Residency Clinical Director will oversee the pediatric oral conscious sedation, and general anesthesia programs of NYU Langone/La Clinica de la Raza at Oakland/Vallejo, Union City.

Duties/Responsibilities:

  • The Residency Clinical Director will work collaboratively with the NYU Langone Advanced Education in Pediatric Dentistry to implement all educational program objectives. Additionally, the Residency Clinical Director will coordinate the CODA required extramural rotations to Anesthesia, Pediatric Medicine, Craniofacial Clinic and Emergency Room coverage.
  • The Residency Clinical Director will maintain a position at La Clinica de la Raza as a pediatric dentist and a faculty position as supervising pediatric dentist and the Associate Program Director in the La Clinica/NYU Langone Pediatric Dentistry training program.
  • The overall goal of the Pediatric Residency at La Clinica is to improve the oral health of vulnerable, underserved, and rural children in California by expanding and enhancing the postdoctoral training programs in pediatric dentistry. This position will directly contribute to this goal by supporting the experiential learning of pediatric dental residents at La Clinica de la Raza.
  • Competency in all aspects of pediatric dentistry.
  • Perform oral exams, preventive care, restorations, extractions, behavior management, and basic orthodontia.
  • Serve as a member of an interdisciplinary team of dentists and physicians that provides exceptional patient care and performs four-handed dentistry and oral surgery.
  • Treat oral diseases and confer with physicians regarding medical/dental problems and assign patients to plaque control or other educational and preventive programs.
  • Attend La Clinica and NYU Langone meetings as required.
  • Keep clinical and other records regarding services provided by individual residents by keeping accurate clinical logs.
  • Daily oversight, instruction, clinical training, and evaluation of pediatric dental trainees at La Clinica de La Raza dental sites including Oakland/Vallejo/Union City.
  • Oversee the pediatric oral conscious sedation, and general anesthesia programs of La Clinica de la Raza.
  • Provide didactic training in pediatric dentistry and mentorship in scholarly research and job placement for pediatric dentists, as needed.
  • Work collaboratively with NYU Langone Program Director to implement all educational program objectives.
  • Other duties and responsibilities as assigned.

The Residency Clinical Director reports to the Associate Dental Director.

Knowledge

  • Adherence all ethical and professional standards, including but not limited to OSHA Bloodborne Pathogen Standard, infection control standards, HIPAA & documentation standards, La Clinica policies & procedures and adherence to safety rules and professional standards.
  • Knowledge of evidence-based approaches to dental care.
  • Knowledge of the information and techniques needed to diagnose and treat human injuries, diseases, and deformities. This includes symptoms, treatment alternatives, drug properties and interactions, and preventive health-care measures.
  • Patient Service: Knowledge of principles and processes for providing patient. services. This includes customer needs assessment, meeting quality standards for services, and evaluation of patient satisfaction.
  • Healthcare Technology: Working knowledge and experience with modern computer applications and electronic health records
  • Continue your professional development through participation in continuing education programs.

Skills

  • Provide direct clinical care to pediatric patients, pediatric patients with special healthcare needs, and patients with developmental conditions, in a manner consistent with current standards of care as recognized by the professional associations.
  • Teach and mentor learners in the care of pediatric patients, pediatric patients with special healthcare needs, and patients with developmental conditions.
  • Possess effective communication and teaching skills.
  • Organized, demonstrates good scheduling and coordination skills.

Abilities

  • Ability to competently & safely perform the clinical services of the specialty in which certified.
  • Ability to convey information effectively.
  • Ability to deal courteously and effectively with patients and maintain good working relationships with other staff.
  • Ability to operate standard types of dental equipment and machinery.
  • Ability to make precisely coordinated movements of the fingers of one or both hands to grasp, manipulate, or assemble very small objects.
  • Ability to see details at close range (within a few feet of the observer).
  • Interpersonal Skills: Able to work professionally and collaboratively as a team member to support the quality/efficiency standards established for the clinic.
  • Ability to work across cultures and demonstrate support of diversity, equity and inclusion.

Education and Experience:

  • Requires graduation from an accredited school of dentistry; Possession of valid D.D.S./D.M.D. license to practice in the State of California; Certificate of advanced training in Pediatric Dentistry. The candidate will be board-certified or board-eligible with the intention of obtaining board certification.
  • Must have a Masters in Pediatric Dentistry.
  • Must hold a current BLS (Basic Life Support) Certificate. You will have 30-day grace period to obtain your certificate from the date of hire.
  • DEA licensure
  • Minimal Sedation Certificate
  • Applicants should have clinical experience and be competent in all areas of pediatric dentistry.
  • Clinical experience should also include experience providing comprehensive surgical and restorative care in the hospital operating room as well as other advanced forms of behavior guidance such as oral conscious sedation.

Highly Desirable Experience

  • Two or more years of experience in all phases of pediatric dentistry and auxiliary utilization.
  • Ideally, your fluency in Spanish will enable you to better serve our culturally diverse patients.
  • Experience in teaching, clinical research, and administration is strongly preferred.
  • Master’s Degree in Public Health (MPH) preferred.

Physical Requirements:

  • Remaining in a stationary position, often standing, or sitting for prolonged periods
  • Bending/lifting, pushing/pulling, adjusting, or moving objects weighing up to 15 pounds in all directions and occasionally more.
  • Repeating motions that may include the neck, wrists, hands and/or fingers.
  • Upper extremity demands: Reaching above shoulder and/or below waist.

Salary Range: $188,326- $247,099 / per year
