Job summary

The Novato Fire Reserve program comprises four levels; entry points depend on qualifications. Levels 1–3 accept new reserves; Level 4 requires completion of the Reserve Firefighter task book and background investigations including polygraph, psych, and medical evaluation.

General requirements include paid training nights and monthly ride-alongs. Level 3 and 4 reserves mentor lower levels, promoting skill transfer and readiness for active service within the district.

Qualifications

• Must be 18 at time of hire (Level 1). Enrollment in EMS and/or Fire related course; OR currently employed by NFD.
• Level 2 requires Level 1 plus Firefighter 1 certificate or paramedic license.
• Level 3 requires Level 1 plus Firefighter 1 certificate and paramedic license.
• Level 4 requires Level 1, Firefighter 1 certificate, paramedic license, and Reserve Firefighter Task Book.

Responsibilities

• Attend three-hour paid training nights, twice per month.
• Level 3 and 4 reserves mentor Level 1 and 2 reserves.
• Attend a minimum of one 12-hour paid ride-along per month on assigned shift.
• Reserves may be eligible for paramedic internships within the district.

Job description

The Novato Fire Reserve program will consist of four (4) levels. Assignments are dependent upon
qualifications. New Reserves may enter the program at Levels 1-3 dependent on qualifications. Each level builds upon the requirements of the preceding levels. Level 4 requires completion of the Reserve Firefighter task book, and background investigation including polygraph, psychological and medical evaluation.
Requirements By Level

• Level 1: Age 18 at time of hire, driver license, High School diploma or GED certificate,

AND enrollment in EMS and/or Fire related course; OR currently employed by NFD.

• Level 2: Meets all Level 1 requirements AND has Firefighter 1 academy or California State Firefighter 1 certificate; OR an active paramedic license.

• Level 3: Meets Level 1 and has Firefighter 1 academy or California State Firefighter 1 certificate, AND has an active paramedic license.

• Level 4: Meets Level and has Firefighter 1 Academy or California State Firefighter 1 certificate, AND active paramedic license, AND has completed Reserve Firefighter Task Book.

General Requirements

• Reserves will be required to attend a three (3) hour paid training night, twice per month
• Level 3 and 4 Reserves will act as Senior Reserve mentors to Level 1 and 2 Reserves
• Once eligible, Reserves will be expected to attend a minimum of one (1), 12 hour paid ride a long per month on the assigned shift.
• In recognition of the benefits of teaching/evaluating paramedic skills of new members, Reserves may be eligible and given priority for Paramedic internships within the district. Internships will be approved on a case-by-case basis.

California State paid sick leave of one (1) hour for every 30 hours worked.
