Job summary

University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) seeks a dedicated Researcher Assistant (Temp) to support animal care and research activities in the Engelhardt laboratory. The role involves clinical care, procedures, and general husbandry to ensure welfare of research animals under IACUC and USDA guidelines.

Requires an Associate’s degree or a high school diploma with two years of related experience; prior experience with laboratory animals is preferred.

Qualifications

• Associate's degree in a related field OR High School diploma or GED and two years of related experience required.
• Prior experience working with laboratory animals or in a veterinary setting preferred.
• Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a team environment.

Responsibilities

• Provide daily care, monitor, and health assessments of research animals.
• Assist veterinarians and research staff with clinical procedures, treatments, and surgeries.
• Administer medications and collect biological samples as directed.
• Monitor animals for signs of illness, distress, or abnormal behavior and report findings promptly.
• Maintain accurate records related to animal health, treatments, and procedures.
• Ensure compliance with IACUC, USDA, and institutional policies and guidelines.
• Support facility operations, including sanitation, equipment maintenance, and inventory management.
• Assist with training of research personnel on proper animal handling and care techniques.
