We are seeking a Research Technologist to manage daily operations of laboratory and field research needs of the Community Science and Innovation for Environmental Justice (CSI EJ) Initiative. The CSI EJ initiative supports and develops scientific, technical, and community-based participatory research (CBPR) capacity that responds to community-identified concerns with disproportionate and adverse environmental exposure and health concerns of industrial food animal production (IFAP) and other industrial (e.g., fossil fuels, petrochemicals, landfills, wastewater treatment) facilities. The primary focus of the CSI EJ Initiative is working in partnership with communities living at the fenceline of such industrial facilities to perform measurements of disproportionate and adverse exposure and health effects. This position will support research projects to investigate environmental and occupational exposures to air pollutants (particulate matter [PM], gases [ammonia, hydrogen sulfide, methane, carbon dioxide], and microbial pathogens and relate exposures to human health outcomes. Work requires basic use of scientific methods, procedures and techniques, particularly in industrial hygiene and atmospheric sciences; though training will be provided, previous experience and a profound understanding of theory behind experiments to perform data analysis and troubleshoot situations that need special attention with a substantial degree of independence are highly preferred.
*Specific Duties & Responsibilities*
- Operate basic and advanced laboratory equipment, including environmental (water, air, sediment/soil) quality testing, settled dust testing, air sensors, air monitoring, and air sampling equipment, incubator, spectrophotometer, laminar flow hood, and other basic lab equipment.
- Complete performance verification, calibration, and technical specification testing of environmental monitoring equipment in laboratory and field settings
- Maintain detailed records of quality assurance and quality control for laboratory and field sampling and analyses of samples.
- Record and analyze results, organize data, perform basic computations, and develop reports and summaries of analyses.
- Maintain relationships with community partners, including through oral and written communications.
- Perform environmental field sampling and collect health outcome data as part of exposure and epidemiologic studies.
Other Responsibilities Include
- Contribute to general maintenance of the laboratory, equipment and supplies.
- Maintain and make adjustments to equipment, e.g. calibrations, performance verification.
- Monitor inventory levels, order materials and supplies in accordance with established policies and maintain records.
- Skills required: air, water and sediment/soil sampling and testing.
*Minimum Qualifications*
- Bachelor's Degree in Biology, Chemistry or related field.
- Some related post-undergraduate work experience preferred.

The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
