Job Summary

The Garrett Herbarium and Fungarium houses a collection of over 450,000 dried and preserved plant and fungi specimens which are primarily used for scientific research. While our collection of over 450,000 specimens dates back to the mid-1800’s and spans the globe, we focus primarily on the biota of Utah and the greater Intermountain West. We are in search of an assistant to aid in a variety of tasks that support the day-to-day operations of the Herbarium and Fungarium in order to further our goal of providing for the care of our collections and their accessibility to researchers and enthusiasts worldwide.

Responsibilities
  • Specimen prep: mounting, boxing, repairing or stabilizing specimens; making boxes and labels
  • Specimen storage: shelving, labeling folders, moving objects, updating taxonomy. This involves accessing high shelves and using a ladder.
  • Data entry: transcribing labels, georeferencing specimens, creating spreadsheets.
  • Participation in outreach and events.
  • Assistance with projects as they arise.

The employee may be invited to participate in field work, but this is not a requirement for the position.

Minimum Qualifications

EQUIVALENCY STATEMENT : 1 year of higher education can be substituted for 1 year of directly related work experience (Example: bachelor’s degree = 4 years of directly related work experience).

Department may hire employee at one of the following job levels:

Research Technician, I: Requires little to no related experience.

Preferences
  • An interest in plants, fungi, or lichens; an understanding of taxonomic hierarchy
  • A university level course in organismal biology is strongly encouraged
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel, familiarity with relational databases
  • Strong organizational, time management, and communication skills
