Job summary

Howard Hughes Medical Institute is seeking a Research Technician I to assist in laboratory research and procedures. You will perform routine experimental techniques such as electrophoresis, centrifugation, and chromatography, collecting and verifying data for reports.

Responsibilities include operating scientific instruments, maintaining records, and contributing to team meetings. A BS degree in a related field and some lab experience are preferred.

Summary

Under general supervision, assist in theperformance of laboratory research and procedures by performing avariety of routine experimental techniques such as electrophoresis,centrifugation, chromatography, and the like. Collect, verify,record, and compile data and information in support ofresearch.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

(Specific duties will depend on needs of the laboratory)

  • Assist scientists and technicians by performing variousresearch procedures and operating a variety of instruments andother scientific equipment.
  • Collect, record, organize and verify the accuracy of data;perform calculations and prepare charts, graphs and reports. Mayuse software applications to assemble, manipulate and/or formatdata and test reports.
  • Configure and operate laboratory apparatus and instruments;read and record instrument data; tabulate data; keep laboratoryrecords.
  • May order chemicals, reagents, and other laboratorysupplies.
  • Participate in laboratory meetings and planning sessions.
  • May maintain insects, plants, animals, and/or bacterial andtissue cultures for experimental purposes.
  • Stay current in research area through applicableliterature.

Education
  • Bachelor of Science degree in an appropriate field or anequivalent combination of education and related workexperience.
Experience
  • Some related laboratory experience preferred.
Skills and Abilities
  • Generally experienced in job duties and in the principles andpractices associated with those duties with an understanding of theunderlying scientific principles.
  • Ability to draft routine reports and keep accurate records ofwork performed.
  • Actively seeks opportunities to increase skills andexpertise.
  • Able to learn complex tasks with general instruction. Able touse experience to perform a variety of new techniques.
Physical Requirements

Remaining in a normal seated or standing position for extendedperiods of time; reaching and grasping by extending hand(s) orarm(s); dexterity to manipulate objects with fingers, for exampleusing a keyboard; communication skills using the spoken word;ability to see and hear within normal parameters; ability to moveabout workspace. The position requires mobility, including theability to move materials weighing up to several pounds (such as alaptop computer or tablet). Work may involve possible exposure tomalodorous vapors, low dose radiation, contamination by toxicchemicals and acids and presence of carcinogenic substances.

Hiring Pay Range:

Research Technician I – $19.24 - $24.09

Pay Type: Hourly

The posted range reflects HHMI’s good faith estimate of the anticipated hiring salary range for this role at the time ofposting. Actual hiring compensation is determined by a candidate’s qualifications, experience, and internal equity.
