Department Information

The Institute for Bioengineering and Bioscience's mission (IBB, https://bioresearch.gatech.edu/) is to build a community across Georgia Tech and its partner institutions that catalyzes, cultivates, and deploys interdisciplinary research and education in bioengineering and biosciences for economic and societal benefit. Job Summary

The Research Technician is responsible for supporting scientific research projects by conducting experiments, collecting data, and maintaining laboratory equipment and supplies. This position requires a strong understanding of research methodologies and protocols, as well as the ability to collaborate effectively with researchers and contribute to the advancement of knowledge within the field.

Responsibilities

  • Hands-on experience with mammalian cell culture using aseptic technique, including experience working with primary cells, immune cells, tissue-derived cell suspensions, or other challenging mammalian sample types, and assessing cell concentration, viability, aggregation, debris, and overall sample quality.
  • Experience with 10x Genomics Chromium workflows or other single-cell sequencing technologies, including preparation of mammalian cell suspensions for single-cell capture and/or preparation of single-cell or RNA-seq libraries.
  • Strong molecular biology experience, including nucleic acid extraction, PCR, and next-generation sequencing library preparation. Experience with quantitative PCR and/or digital PCR assay setup and analysis would be preferred.
  • Experience with next-generation sequencing workflows and instrumentation, particularly Illumina or Element AVITI platforms. Experience working in a genomics core, shared resource, clinical laboratory, or other client-service laboratory environment would be helpful.
  • Familiarity with laboratory quality and sample-management practices, including LIMS, sample tracking, QC documentation, SOPs, and/or working under CLIA, CAP, GLP, or another formal quality management system.

  • This job requires working knowledge of the principles and practices of scientific and related laboratory operations. Includes skill in data organization, management and evaluation; statistical analysis; project organization; and, use of advanced statistical and scientific computer applications.

  • Excellent aseptic technique and careful handling of mammalian cells and sensitive biological samples.
  • Ability to troubleshoot complex laboratory procedures and recognize when results require additional review.

  • Ability to learn new technologies and adapt to evolving core laboratory services.
KNOWLEDGE/ABILITIES
Single-Cell Sequencing
  • Perform single-cell sequencing workflows using 10x Genomics Chromium and related technologies.
  • Receive, handle, assess, and prepare mammalian cell suspensions and other biological samples for single-cell applications.
  • Evaluate cell concentration, viability, aggregation, debris, and overall sample quality before library preparation.
  • Construct single-cell RNA-seq, immune profiling, and other genomics libraries.
  • Perform library quality control using Qubit, TapeStation, qPCR, and related instrumentation.
  • Prepare sequencing runs on Element AVITI and Illumina sequencing platforms.
  • Monitor sequencing runs, perform routine instrument maintenance, and document run performance.
  • Maintain accurate sample tracking, project records, and laboratory documentation.
Quantitative PCR and Digital PCR
  • Perform quantitative PCR and digital PCR assays.
  • Prepare and manage primers, probes, standards, controls, master mixes, and assay-specific reagents.
  • Assist with assay development, optimization, verification, and troubleshooting.
