The Research Technician (Murray Blackmore Lab) will perform experiments in a pre-clinical neuroscience research lab focused on spinal cord injury. In addition, this individual will gather and analyze experimental data, help organize inventory in the lab space, and help to train and supervise student volunteers.
Duties and Responsibilities
1. Perform lab work related to histology, including animal perfusion, dissection of brain and spinal cord, tissue slicing, immunohistochemistry, and microscopy.
2. Perform animal surgeries involving targeted brain and spinal injections and controlled injury of the spinal cord.
3. Perform behavioral testing in mice.
4. Train and oversee student volunteers and employees in histological and behavioral analyses.
5. Complete laboratory research-related purchases within the Marquette University purchasing system and maintain proper inventory of all research related items.
6. Analyze experimental data and prepare figures to visualize results.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Bachelor’s degree in biology, Neuroscience, Biomedical Science.
A minimum of 1 year of related experience required.
Must have working scientific knowledge within the field of biology, specifically pre-clinical models of research.
Willingness to perform surgeries and behavioral testing in rodent models (training provided).
Ability to prepare, comprehend, and comply with written protocols and other regulatory requirements.
Strong record-keeping and organizational skills
Demonstrated attention to detail, professional attitude, and ability to maintain strong work ethic.
Extended periods of sitting or standing at lab bench
Daily exposure to laboratory chemicals
Preferred Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Experience with histology and/or microscopy.
Experience with small animal surgeries is desirable (training will be provided to otherwise strong applicants).
Understanding and experience with laboratory regulatory requirements related to lab safety, controlled substances, biosafety, and animal use.
Effective communication and interpersonal skills
Familiarity with Microsoft Office suite
