Why join Dr. Benjamin Levi’s Lab at UT Southwestern?

The Levi Laboratory is located in the Department of Surgery at UT Southwestern and lead by the Principal Investigator, Dr. Benjamin Levi. The lab mission is to improve the lives of people living with skin and musculoskeletal diseases through rigorous science and compassion. The lab consists of 2000 square feet state-of-the-art laboratory space equipped with equipment to facilitate experiments and research with tissue cultures, small animal surgeries, and molecular biology. All lab members receive leadership training and coaching from Dr. Levi and other senior level lab personnel. Besides working hard, the Levi Lab will step away from the bench to give back to the community.

Job Summary

The Levi Lab is looking is for a Research Technician II to join the team and willing to commit to at least two years. The Research Technician will support ongoing research projects related to heterotopic ossification and injury-based mechanisms in the body. They will also be handling animals, in addition to immunohistochemistry and microscope work.

Experience and Education
  1. Previous molecular laboratory experience, preferred.
  2. Bachelor's degree with major coursework in field of assignment and no experience required.
  3. Two (2) years college with emphasis in coursework in field of assignment and two (2) years of laboratory experience at level of Laboratory Technical Assistant or equivalent.
  4. High school graduation or GED and four (4) years laboratory experience to include two (2) years at level of Laboratory Technical Assistant or equivalent.
Laboratory Expectations
  1. Animal breeding, genotyping, handling, and surgery.
  2. Molecular biology techniques, including but not limited to PCR, qPCR, western blotting, RNA/DNA extraction, cloning, CRISPR/Cas9 gene editing, and next generation sequencing.
  3. Flow cytometry and mass spectrometry.
  4. Histology pipeline from tissue harvest to embedding, sectioning, staining, and confocal microscopy.
  5. Design and execute experiments to investigate molecular mechanisms underlying biological processes.
  6. Maintain a respectful and inclusive laboratory environment.
  7. Maintain a clean and functional workspace.
  8. Analyze and interpret experimental data using relevant software and statistical methods.
  9. Stay current with advances in molecular biology research and contribute to the development of new methodologies and techniques.
  10. Prepare research findings for publication in scientific journals and present results at conferences and meetings, including weekly laboratory meetings and reading/writing clubs.
Job Duties
  1. Performs routine scientific and medical research work in science areas such as biology, chemistry, physics, or other related scientific field.
  2. Assembles and/or operates various laboratory equipment and apparatus.
  3. Records research data in accordance with prescribed procedures, discussing results with supervisor.
  4. Assists in collection of data for project reports.
  5. Reads literature and confers with supervisor concerning implementation of new procedures.
  6. May plan for, and provide working supervision to, work of laboratory personnel of lower grade engaged in limited phase of research project.
  7. Performs other duties as assigned.
