Job description

Position Description

A Research Technician position is available in the laboratory of Dr. Helen Hou at Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory (houlab.org), starting in 2023. You will play a prominent role in the research program of a brand-new interdisciplinary neuroscience lab, studying how the brain controls movements and behaviors, including how the brain coordinates facial expressions to convey emotions. Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory is located east of New York City on Long Island, conveniently accessible with the Long Island Rail Road (1-hr ride from Penn Station).

Position Responsibilities

Depending on the person's interests and skills, experiments may include: testing rodent behavior, performing optogenetic stimulation, and using in vivo electrophysiology and imaging to record neural activity, dissections and immunostaining of rodent brains, rodent intracranial surgery, as well as building experimental hardware and/or software for data analysis. In addition, responsibilities will include general lab organization and maintaining of rodent colonies. The Research Technician will have the opportunity to work closely with the principal investigator as well as to develop skills as an independent scientist, and contributions to experiments will merit authorship on resulting publications (Four technicians who previously worked with Dr. Hou have been co-authors on papers.)

Position Requirements

Applicants should have a Bachelor's degree, previous research experience, and a background in a STEM field such as neuroscience, biology, engineering, or computer science. Experience working with rodents, using neuroscience and biology techniques, and/or programming will be judged favorably but not required. We look for candidates who are curious about the brain and behavior. A two-year commitment is preferred.
