JOB SUMMARY
Works under general supervision to provide routine technical assistance in performance of assignments requiring basic knowledge of fundamental techniques and practices related to particular field of science.


This position in the Dr. Jinfan Wang lab (https://labs.utsouthwestern.edu/wang-jinfan-lab) is well-suited for a recent graduate (bachelor's degree) who wants to gain more research experience before pursuing graduate studies. Experienced candidates are also welcome to apply. When you join our lab, we prioritize your continued development into an independent scientist. We will work together to help you identify and achieve your goals and develop a plan to tackle an important question. We also will enhance your ability to think critically and communicate effectively, skills transferable to any career path. In these exciting, early years of the group, we are looking for people who are up to the challenge to help build our research group from the ground up.


The ideal candidate will have a bachelor's degree in Biochemistry, biophysics, biology, or a related discipline in a laboratory environment; a keen interested in basic or curiosity-driven biological science research, particularly using biochemical approaches. Must be willing to learn and grow as a scientist and willing to interact with all levels of staff and contribute positively to the lab environment.


Preferred expectations:



  • Be self-motivated and excited about biochemistry, RNA, and translation.

  • Active participant in lab meetings, including presenting their own data.

  • Assist senior lab mates with experiments and/or experimental analysis for most of each workday.

  • Perform independent and guided reading into relevant topics for the project.

  • Keep a strong lab notebook and communicate experimental plans/issues.

  • Would like for candidate to be a member of the lab for 2-3 years.

EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION
Required



  • Education
    Completion of two (2) years of college or specialized training in histology, medical technology or relevant field or
    High School graduation including courses in basic sciences such as physics, chemistry, biology, etc.




  • Experience
    1 year of experience as Laboratory Technical Assistant or equivalent with Completion of two (2) years of college or
    3 years of laboratory experience including two years as Laboratory Technical Assistant or equivalent with High School graduation



JOB DUTIES



  • Assists in conducting experiments and working on research problems in such fields as physiology, bacteriology, tissue culture, chemistry, and other related fields by performing basic, routine, and least complex procedures as prescribed by supervisor.

  • Assembles and/or operates various laboratory equipment and apparatus.

  • Records resulting data in accordance with established methods. Confers with supervisor concerning results obtained, and modifies procedures in accordance with instruction of supervisor.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.
