Job description

The Herman B Wells Center for Pediatric Research conducts basic science and translational research within the Department of Pediatrics at Indiana University School of Medicine. The Wells Center houses more than 300 faculty investigators, staff, and trainees seeking answers to the most pressing questions related to childhood illness.
With the collaboration between scientists and physicians, the center aims to increase knowledge of causes and mechanisms of serious pediatric diseases. Our goal is to develop innovative approaches to the diagnosis and treatment of sick children in Indiana and beyond.

Job Summary

This position will assist the Principal Investigator in conducting research focused on type 1 diabetes immunology, tolerance, and autoimmunity using relevant in vitro and ex vivo models of mouse and human type 1 diabetes. This includes, but is not limited to, small animal surgery, immunohistochemical staining, tissue and cell culture, qPCR, and flow cytometry assays. This research makes extensive use of cell and molecular biology techniques and includes small animal (mouse) handling and dosing.
Department-Specific Responsibilities

  • Maintains mouse colonies (breeding, weaning, genotyping, maintaining records)
  • Performs cell and molecular biological techniques (tissue culture, IHC, flow cytometry)
  • Performs general laboratory management duties (order lab supplies, maintain inventory and reagents, etc.)
General Responsibilities
  • Performs a wide variety of complex experiments and reports results
  • Keeps organized analytical data of performed experiments
  • Provides support for equipment maintenance as needed
  • Acts as a liaison to students and laboratory personnel for training
  • Maintains laboratory supply requisition and management
  • May train junior-level staff
  • May help plan experiments or short-term goals

Working Conditions / Demands

The role regularly requires the ability to effectively communicate. The role frequently requires the ability to move about the work environment and to position oneself to operate laboratory equipment effectively. The role requires the ability to move objects weighing up to 25 pounds and will occasionally work near moving mechanical parts. The person in this role must be able to perform the essential functions with or without an accommodation.
