Job description

We are seeking a highly motivated Aerial Observer Research Technician to participate in aerial surveys for whales, dolphins, and sea turtles in New England waters. The duties include serving as an observer on six to ten aerial surveys per month, quality checking data, coordinating with other observers and the flight crew, and analyzing vertical photographs for marine species detection and identification. Most office work involves reviewing photographs of marine species. This is a grant-funded position with at least 12 months of staffing, with potential for extension if additional funding is secured. Flying schedules will cover various dates throughout the year, including weekends and holidays. The successful applicant must complete aircraft and marine safety and survival training.

This is a full-time, 1-year, grant-funded position with benefits. It primarily involves fieldwork, requiring irregular hours and long days during flights, with occasional weekend and holiday work. Normal hours are Monday to Friday, 9 am to 5 pm, with flexibility based on fieldwork needs. Non-fieldwork can be performed remotely.

Essential Functions

  1. Participate in aerial survey activities, including logistics, data collection, reporting, photographic analysis, and ground contact.
  2. Serve as an aerial observer for cetaceans and sea turtles, including participating in aerial photography.
  3. Maintain safety and camera equipment, assist with preparation and troubleshooting during flights.
  4. Keep flight and data logs, assist with data quality checks, summarize data, and contribute to reports.
  5. Analyze digital imagery for species detection and identification, process and analyze data.
  6. Assist with right whale photo-identification and catalog processing.
  7. Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications

Minimum Training and Experience

  • B.A. or B.S. in Biology or a related science.
  • At least two years of research experience post-college.
  • At least six months of aerial and/or boat survey experience.
  • Skill in identifying marine mammals of New England.
  • Experience with digital wildlife photography.
  • Photo-identification experience is highly desirable.
  • Participation in aerial research on right whales, large whales, or turtles.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Familiarity with digital photography equipment and field use.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office; experience with R or GIS is a plus.
  • Good communication and coordination skills.
  • Ability to meet deadlines and ensure data quality.
  • Attention to detail and ability to work independently.
  • Comfort with long hours analyzing photos in the office.
  • Ability to fly in small aircraft without motion sickness.
  • Reliable transportation to New Bedford Airport for early morning travel.
