Michigan Sugar Company has an immediate, full-time opportunity for a Research Technician, located at theAgricultural Research Center, 1459 S. Valley Center Drive, Bay City, MI 48706.

JOB SUMMARY

The Research Technician will be responsible for the transport and operation of heavy farm equipment to assist with the planting, maintenance, and harvest of variety and agronomy trials throughout the growing region. This position will also carry out seasonal and incidental equipment and vehicle maintenance and assist with the collection of storage samples from piling grounds. The Research Technician will be required to travel amongst all plot and pile locations.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

• Assist with the planting and harvest of grower test plots, variety trials, and chemical trials.
• Transport and operate heavy farm equipment throughout the year.
• Carry out seasonal and incidental maintenance work.
• Perform plot and/or bulk applications of fertilizer, herbicide, and fungicide.
• Help prep seed and chemical for trial work as needed.
• Assist with sample collection for sugar beet storage pile testing.
• Identify opportunities for process improvements and optimization within the Research team.

POSITION QUALIFICATIONS

• Must possess a high school diploma.
• Strong interest in agriculture and a desire to learn about crop production practices.
• Ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions and perform physical tasks such as lifting and bending.
• Excellent observation skills and attention to detail.
• Must be able to use a full-face respirator during in-season spray applications.
• Basic knowledge of agronomic principles, crop physiology and soil science.
• Welding experience/certification is preferred but not required.
• Good communication and interpersonal skills.
• Ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
• Must hold a valid driver’s license.
• Must have or be able to obtain forklift certification.
• Hold or have the ability to obtain a Class A CDL and Commercial Pesticide Applicator’s License.
• Previous farm or fieldwork experience is preferred, but not required.
