Job Summary

We are seeking a Research Support Specialist I for our Insourcing Solutions site in Poolesville, MD.

  • Prepare and administer research treatments; collect and record physiological data (weight, temperature, pulse, respiration).
  • Perform technical procedures related to NHP retroviral, human respiratory, and flavivirus studies, including blood collection, IV catheterization, intubation, broncho-alveolar lavage, tracheal and nasal lavages, research observations, and treatment administration.
  • Have a basic understanding of aseptic technique, anesthesia induction, monitoring, recovery, drug dosage calculations, and administration.
  • Assist Veterinarian & Sr. RSS staff with surgeries and specialized procedures.
  • Conduct daily animal health observations and report abnormal findings.
  • Maintain electronic medical records and communicate animal health info to vet staff.
  • Collect, preserve, and prepare biological samples.
  • Participate in necropsies/tissue harvests.
  • Set up procedures, prepare supplies, and maintain freezer organization and sample inventory.
  • Follow universal precautions, work safely with biohazards, and help maintain a safe research environment.
  • Report animal health, care, and facility infrastructure issues as needed.
Qualifications

Minimum requirements include:

  • High school diploma or GED; BS in Animal Science, Biology, or related field, or A.A. in Veterinary Technology preferred.
  • 2-3 years’ experience with non-human primates in biomedical research or veterinary hospital technical work preferred.
  • Proficiency in MS Word, Access, Excel; strong technical vocabulary.
  • RVT/CVT/LVT or LAT certification preferred.

The hourly rate ranges from $28 to $30, depending on experience, skills, education, certifications, and location.
