Job summary

The University of Pennsylvania is seeking a Research Specialist B to conduct molecular biology and cell culture experiments related to HIV-1 vaccine design, and to assist in day-to-day management of a large lab space and budget.

You will supervise staff, order supplies, and ensure safety practices are followed while working with faculty on translational research involving global pathogens. Strong organizational and communication skills are essential.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science required with 1–2 years of related experience or equivalent.
  • Experience with molecular biology techniques and cell culture.

Responsibilities

Job Description Summary

This Research Specialist B position will be responsible forconducting molecular biological and cell culture experimentsrelated to HIV-1 vaccine design and for assisting in the day-to-daymanagement of the laboratory, which includes 10,000 sq ft ofresearch space, a Biosafety Level 2/3 suite, a DNA sequencing corelaboratory, 25 staff members, and an annual operating budget inexcess of $10 million. Duties of this position include supervisionand training of lab staff members in safety protocols and properresearch techniques; ordering of research supplies and equipment;and ensuring proper use and upkeep of equipment. This position willbe responsible for shared work responsibilities distributed amongthe 24 lab staff members so as to maintain efficient, effective andsafe operations of the laboratory. This position may have as manyas four research staff who report to it for daily assignments inthe conduct of basic research projects that are critical to theresearch mission of the lab. This position will work closely withthe Lab Principal Investigators (Drs. George M. Shaw and BeatriceH. Hahn) to oversee and conduct laboratory activities carried outby the lab staff. The laboratory pursues basic and translationalresearch on global pathogens including HIV, HCV, malaria and COVID,which requires that this position have a high level of scientificunderstanding along with strong management skills. The individualwho fills this position will conduct hands-on bench researchrelated to HIV vaccine development under the direction of Drs. Shawand Hahn.
