Job Description:
  • Develop, implement, and maintain web-based applications on AgroClimate.org: Specifically, this task will involve developing and implementing the necessary algorithms and interface modifications to add new features in the Climate Indicators tool. Responsible for incorporating a new module for evaluation of weather extremes probabilities will be added to the tool to allow users investigate the probabilities of freezes, dry spells, heat stress, excess moisture and other extremes during user-defined periods of the year anywhere in the USA. Ensure the software meets software design principles to establish stability, security, and maintainability.
  • Maintain and improve cloud-hosted applications with a focus on upgrading the database connections of existing disease alert systems that are currently implemented in the system to work with point data (weather stations) and gridded weather products. Alert systems affected include the strawberry, blueberry and citrus advisory systems.
  • Build and maintain APIs and databases: Perform the necessary tasks to maintain the NASS-DSS Application Programming Interface (API) tool updated and operational 24/7 as well as developing new APIs if necessary.

Commensurate with education and experience

Required Qualifications:

A Bachelor’s Degree in computer or physical science, statistics, bioinformatics, analytics, or similar field and two years of experience; Master’s Degree in computer or physical science, statistics, bioinformatics, analytics, or similar field.

Preferred:
  • Experience with applications that consume geospatial, weather, or climate data (e.g., raster/vector data, time series, gridded climate products, remote sensing imagery)
  • Experience with serverless architectures and workflow orchestration (AWS Step Functions) and infrastructure-as-code (CloudFormation)
  • Familiarity with agricultural, environmental, or natural resources domains
  • Experience building responsive, accessible interfaces that meet web accessibility standards
  • Experience with containerization (Docker), automated testing, and CI/CD pipelines
