Qualifications

  • Knowledge of FPGA design using latest generation Xilinx/Intel chips; HDL coding in VHDL/Verilog.
  • Programming in C/C++, Python for Linux; kernel module development.
  • Knowledge of EPICS control system or real-time control on Linux/RTOS.
  • Familiar with PCIe, 1/10 GigE, USB, DDR, AXI, Wishbone; lab test and debug.
  • Experience with SoC FPGA platforms (Zynq Ultrascale+, RFSoc, Intel SoC FPGA).

Job description

The Detectors R&D team in the Data Acquisition & Detectors group within the National Synchrotron Light Source (NSLS-II) at Brookhaven National Laboratory seek experienced Scientific Researchers or R&D Engineers with a focus on Data Acquisition Systems to join our group and work in close collaboration with other departments across the Laboratory. Ideal candidate will be a self-motivated, collaborative individual with experience developing high-bandwidth, low latency FPGA-based designs, including RTL coding, synthesis, timing analysis, simulation, verification and lab test and debug. In this role, you will work closely with specialists in custom sensors, ASICs, control systems in Detector R&D group, as well as with scientists in other BNL departments and collaborating outside institutions.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Research, design, and develop data acquisition systems.
  • Interface and collaborate with other departments across the laboratory.
  • Lead and participate in testing and measurements at the laboratory and at experiment sites.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • BA/BS Degree or equivalent experience, preferably in Computer Science and 3 years of relevant experience.
  • Knowledge of FPGA design using the latest generation Xilinx/Intel chips, HDL coding using VHDL and/or Verilog.
  • Programming experience using C/C++, Python, Rust targeted for Linux applications.
  • Development of Linux Kernel modules and driver support.
  • Knowledge of EPICS control system or custom real time control systems running on Linux or RTOS such as RTEMS, VxWorks, or FreeRTOS.
  • Familiarity with standard communication protocols (PCIe, 1/10 Gigabit Ethernet, USB, DDR, AXI, Wishbone).
  • Familiarity with benchtop testing and debugging of circuit boards - oscilloscopes, arbitrary waveform generators, power supplies, multimeters.
  • Advanced problem-solving and critical reasoning skills.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Seasoned ability to articulate and present ideas.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently, with a team, and in large collaborations.
Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Printed Circuit Board schematic capture and layout experience.
  • Experience working with SoC FPGA platforms such as the Zynq Ultrascale+, RFSoc or Intel SoC FPGA.
  • Experience working with high-speed transceivers in FPGA (GTP/GTX/GTH).
  • Experience with hardware circuit design including ADCs, DACs, microprocessors, memories, linear/switching voltage regulators.
  • Experience integrating FPGAs with custom ASICs with sensors to create low noise, high speed readout systems.
  • Familiarity with revision control and modern computing workflows such as Git, Jenkins, Docker.
  • Experience working with digital signal processing techniques.
  • Familiarity with research environment is desirable.

Brookhaven National Laboratory is committed to providing fair, equitable and competitive compensation. The full salary range for this position is $81,950.00 - $120,000.00 / year. Salary offers will be commensurate with the final candidate’s qualification, education and experience and considered with the internal peer group.
