Job summary

The University of Chicago Research Computing Center (RCC) seeks an Application Software Developer to design, develop, and maintain web applications using Python, JavaScript, HTML/CSS, and modern frameworks.

This hybrid role requires onsite collaboration with faculty and researchers, supporting on‑prem infrastructure and WordPress sites, and contributing to DevOps and CI/CD practices to deliver research software on time.

Qualifications

• Knowledge of Linux/UNIX systems and shell scripting.
• Experience with Python programming language.
• Experience with web development technologies (JavaScript, HTML/CSS, Docker, and frameworks).
• Skillful at developing, designing, deploying and supporting applications.
• Basic knowledge of relational and non-relational databases.
• Experience developing and integrating RESTful APIs.

Responsibilities

• Develop and maintain web applications using technologies such as Python, JavaScript, HTML, CSS, and relevant frameworks.
• Design, develop, test, and deploy web and application software solutions using industry best practices and methodologies.
• Build and maintain server-side applications using Python and ensure secure and efficient handling of data and application logic.
• Work with the system team to maintain the on-premises infrastructure where app dev websites are hosted.
• Administer, maintain, and contribute to WordPress sites created by the RCC.
• Collaborate with faculty to identify and develop applications that support research; peer review contributions.
• Define and document project requirements and deliverables; maintain documentation.
• Assist with design, architecture and implementation of software solutions.
• Develop applications within CI/CD automation processes.
• Suggest ideas to streamline product development and operations.
• Supports and maintains existing applications and responds to user requests.
• Gather requirements from stakeholders and work with moderate guidance.
