Job summary

Carnegie Mellon University seeks a Research Scientist to serve as Project Director for Industrial Futures within the Scott Institute for Energy Innovation. The role leads research, engagement, and programmatic activities at the intersection of energy, industrial transformation, entrepreneurship, and policy.

The candidate will coordinate complex projects, manage partners and stakeholders, and translate findings for policymakers and practitioners while mentoring students and researchers.

Qualifications

  • Ph.D. in engineering, public policy, economics, management, or a related field.
  • 3–5 years of relevant research or professional experience.
  • Demonstrated research in energy, industrial transformation, tech innovation, entrepreneurship, workforce development, or regional economic development.
  • Ability to design and conduct rigorous applied research with multiple quantitative/qualitative approaches.
  • Strong ability to analyze datasets using R, Python, Stata, or comparable software.

Responsibilities

  • Lead research and programmatic activities at Industrial Futures; define and advance the research agenda.
  • Coordinate multi-institution projects; manage deliverables, timelines, and collaboration.
  • Lead CMU's INDABA Partnership and coordinate research across partner institutions.
  • Engage with industry, government, and stakeholders to translate research into policy.
  • Advise or mentor students and junior researchers; contribute to a collaborative research culture.
