Role Overview

We seek a research scientist specialized in Power System Operation for our research center in Raleigh. As part of the global Hitachi Energy Research organization, you will lead innovative research projects to advance knowledge and develop future products and services.

Your Responsibilities

  1. Propose, contribute to, and lead R&D projects related to power system operation and adjacent fields.
  2. Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams across the organization to address real-world challenges.
  3. Support and coordinate research initiatives across all business units.
  4. Serve as a subject matter expert in power systems within interdisciplinary teams, including machine learning, cybersecurity, and human-technology interaction.
  5. Identify technological gaps and develop innovative solutions for current and future energy systems.
  6. Develop and propose novel ideas for power system control across various timescales, from seconds to intra-day, supporting the energy transition.
  7. Network internally and share expertise across the company.
  8. Collaborate with external partners such as universities, labs, startups, and vendors.
  9. Disseminate research findings through publications, patents, and reports.
  10. Uphold Hitachi Energy’s core values of safety and integrity, taking responsibility and caring for colleagues and the business.

Your Background

  • Ph.D. in electrical engineering focusing on power systems, or Master’s with equivalent industrial experience.
  • Legal work authorization for employment in the United States.
  • Experience in transmission or distribution control room operations is highly valued.
  • Knowledge of control technologies like SCADA, EMS, DMS, or substation automation is preferred.
  • Understanding of reliability standards and operational guidelines (e.g., NERC, ISOs) is advantageous.
  • Experience in power system modeling, dynamics, operation, control, or planning is desirable.
  • Familiarity with standards and protocols such as IEC 61850, DNP3, PMU protocols.
  • Proficiency with tools like Matlab, Simulink, PSCAD, PSS/E, DIgSILENT PowerFactory.
  • Programming skills in Python or C++ are preferred.
  • Research demonstrated through publications in reputable journals and conferences.
  • Strong innovation skills and application-oriented research competence.
  • Self-motivated, curious, quick learner.
  • Attention to detail, ability to work independently and collaboratively.
  • Excellent communication skills in English.
