Job Description:
The Polymer Institute in the College of Engineering is seeking a highly motivated Research Scientist to join its research team in June 2025. The Research Scientist will work on research projects within the Polymer Institute in the College of Engineering. This position performs research tasks using polymer synthesis/processing equipment, additive manufacturing equipment and various characterization instruments. The employee must be self-directed and able to work with minimum supervision. The employee must also be able to document results and write quarterly/yearly progress reports to granting agencies. The candidate will be expected to perform laboratory experiments in support of funded projects, perform laboratory experiments to develop new areas of research, perform analysis of samples, develop new protocols, interpret results, write manuscripts for publication in refereed journals, and write/assist with preparation of grant proposals. In addition, this position will assist the Sr. Director in running day-to-day operations of the Polymer Institute. Experience in supervising laboratory experiments of graduate and undergraduate students is highly desired.
The initial appointment will be for one year and may be renewed based on need, availability of funding, employee performance, and other factors.
Minimum Qualifications:
1. A Ph.D. in Polymer/Biomedical/Mechanical/Manufacturing/Chemical Engineering or closely related field
2. At least 1-3 years of experience in additive manufacturing (FDM technology) and polymer processing (compounding and extrusion)
3. At least 1-3 years of experience using characterization equipment for thermal analysis (DSC, TGA, DMA), FTIR, SEM and Rheology
4. Knowledge of CAD tools such SolidWorks, Simplify 3D, G-codes
5. Experience in writing manuscripts and supervising laboratory experiments of graduate and undergraduate students
Preferred Qualifications:
1. 2-3 years of polymers processing and/or additive manufacturing experience
2. Publications in peer-reviewed journals is a plus
3. The ability to generate new ideas for research and write grant proposals preferred
