Job description

Purpose of Position

This position is for a full-time research role in the Advanced Computational Composite Mechanics (ACCM) group in the Institute for Predictive Performance Methodologies at UTARI. The ACCM group develops novel methodologies and computational tools for performance and durability prediction in advanced composite materials. The Research Scientist III will work on research and development projects that include design and execution as well as supporting new grant/contract opportunities. The role may include contributing to defining the research scope of the group, leading projects, managing portions of budgets, and contributing to patentable ideas and patent applications. Activities are typically a combination of lab work (experimental and theoretical) and project management. Perform job duties under some direct supervision. This role involves occasional travel to conferences, collaborators, and sponsor facilities.

• Develops computational models and software; conducts computational model setup and parametric studies; evaluates results and compares them with experiments.

Required Qualifications

• Bachelor's of Science in mechanical or aerospace engineering, or related discipline, and eight (8) years of relevant experience, or twelve (12) years of an equivalent combination of education and experience.
• The successful applicant must be a U.S. citizen.

Preferred Qualifications

• PhD in mechanical or aerospace engineering and two (2) years of relevant experience.
• Experience working with the Air Force Research Laboratory or other similar DoW (Department of War) research and development centers.
• Able to work on-site at the Air Force Research Laboratory in Dayton, OH.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

• Demonstrated experience in developing complex distributed memory architecture based software implementing modern mechanical modeling concepts such as eXtended Finite Element Method.
• Demonstrated experience in scientific programming in C++ and MPI, OPenMP and other parallel computing tools and libraries.
• Familiarity with visualization software and scripting languages, i.e. PYTHON.
• Experience in application and development of computational methods to composite mechanics including woven composites.
• Able to document work / keep accurate records, present findings/results through both oral and written communication to internal and external customers, multi-task, collaboratively work in interdisciplinary teams, work on projects independently, maintain awareness of current technological advancements related to this field.

Work Schedule

• Monday through Friday; 8:00am through 5:00pm
