Job Description

We have an exciting opportunity for a Research Scientist II at UL Research Institutes, based in our Material Discovery Research Institutes (MDRI) in Skokie, Illinois. The Research Scientist II will work to facilitate the operation and maintenance of state-of-the-art synthesis and characterization instrumentation to support other groups in the institute in executing the synthesis and characterization of materials, as a member of the Accelerated Methodologies Research Team.

The MDRI works to develop and deploy new materials to address global safety challenges. Pursuing materials that will help produce transformational safety breakthroughs, MDRI harnesses advanced computing and high-throughput experimental methods to create innovative materials supporting renewable energy and environmental sustainability. Our focus includes research into materials capable of carbon capture and energy storage, aiming to reduce the adverse impacts of fossil fuel reliance and enable a transition to renewable energy sources.

What You’ll Learn And Achieve

As the Research Scientist II, you will:

  • Assist research scientists in materials synthesis, characterization, inventory management, and laboratory maintenance.
  • Prepare and handle chemical reagents, compounds, and samples for analysis, ensuring accuracy and safety.
  • Follow SOPs for experimental protocols to ensure consistency and reproducibility.
  • Assist in calibrating and troubleshooting laboratory equipment, reporting issues promptly.
  • Collaborate with team members and experts to troubleshoot and resolve technical issues.
  • Maintain the lab environment, including ordering supplies and ensuring safety and cleanliness.
  • Ensure compliance with safety protocols and industry regulations.
  • Contribute to research on water purification and treatment using advanced porous materials and surface chemistries.
  • Support workflows involving synthesis, functionalization, and performance testing of materials for contaminant removal from water.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

What Makes You a Great Fit

Ideal candidates will possess many of the following:

  • Advanced knowledge of porous materials chemistry, synthesis, and evaluation.
  • Proficiency in materials science or analytical chemistry, including inorganic and hybrid materials.
  • Experience developing materials for water purification and treatment.
  • Hands-on experience with analytical instruments like diffractometers, adsorption apparatus, spectrometers.
  • Proven method development and optimization skills.
  • Knowledge of laboratory safety protocols.
  • Attention to detail and ability to manage multiple projects.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively.
  • Curiosity and adaptability in an innovative environment.

Professional Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s in chemistry or materials science + 6+ years of related experience, or
  • Master’s in chemistry or materials science + 2+ years, or
  • PhD in chemistry or materials science + no postdoc required.
  • Experience in university or industrial research labs, especially in wet chemistry.
  • Experience in R&D, water treatment materials, or surface modification techniques is a plus.

Salary Range: $81,456.37 - $112,002.51
