Job description

The Optical Materials, Structures, and Systems Branch is seeking a highly motivated Research Physicist or Engineer to work in the Fiber Photonic Systems Section to develop state-of-the-art sensing techniques and instrumentation for applications in metrology. A prospective candidate should hold an advanced degree in Physics, Applied Physics, Electrical or Mechanical Engineering. Experience in electromagnetic measurements, optical physics or optoelectronics will be beneficial as well as specific experience in Labview, Matlab, Comsol, electronic design and testing, electronic instrumentation and control and/or prototype development.

The Fiber Photonic Systems Section conducts research into novel fiber optic and photonic devices and sensors. Research areas in the section include quantum sensing such as optically pumped magnetometers and Rydberg atom based electrometry, electromagnetic simulation, fiber optic distributed sensing based on Brillouin, Rayleigh and Bragg scattering, fiber optic dosimetry, laser based sensing, and fiber optic interferometry.

The candidate should be capable of working both independently as well as part of a team and will be required to participate in off-site tests. Past experience in prototyping and field tests will also be beneficial.

The Naval Research Laboratory conducts research in a broad range of scientific and engineering disciplines of interest to the Navy. Candidates interested in pursuing a career in research are encouraged to apply.

For questions about this opportunity please contact Dr. Geoffrey Cranch at Geoffrey.a.cranch.civ@us.navy.mil. Applicants may send curriculum vitae, publication list, and the names of three references, via the NRL submission drop box provided in this advert. Please do NOT include social security number or date of birth in the application documents.

Candidates should be US citizens and must be able to obtain and maintain the required level of security clearance. NRL is an equal opportunity employer.
