Research Oceanographer – Goddard Institute for Space Studies

The Earth Sciences Division, Goddard Institute for Space Studies (GISS)(Code 611) is seeking a skilled scientist to conduct research involving modeling and evaluation of ocean models with the goal of a greater understanding of the ocean role in climate change.

Duties:

Vacant research positions may be filled at one of several grade levels depending upon the scientific impact of the person selected. A review may be required to determine the appropriate grade level of the position and supplemental materials may be required from the selectee. Please keep this in mind when indicating the lowest grade you will accept.

As a Research Oceanographer in the area of ocean modeling and climate research, you will perform research on the modeling and evaluation of ocean models within the framework of the GISS Earth System Model, thus contributing to the overall mission of understanding Earth and planetary climates.

Specifically, you will:

Conduct research related to physical or bio-geophysical oceanography, modeling and the interactions of oceans with the atmosphere, sea ice and/or ice sheets. Lead studies to understand and model the role of the ocean in determining air-sea fluxes of heat, water, nutrients and chemical fluxes, the transport of heat, fresh water and components within the ocean, and the role of the ocean in long-term and/or abrupt climate changes.

Assume leadership role in the development and improvement of ocean model codes in the GISS Earth System Model that allow the full range of conditions relevant to a broad range of ocean conditions to be explored, including applications to paleoclimates, future climate and exoplanets.

Develop models planned for use in global simulations of atmospheric and ocean dynamics and climate change in the GISS climate program.

Represent GISS and NASA at conferences, workshops, and committee meetings and to the media and the public at large.

Qualifications

In addition to the Basic Education Requirement, you must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade, which has equipped you with the particular competencies needed to successfully perform the duties of the position described above.

For GS-13, specialized experience is performing physical oceanography research using in-situ or remotely sensed data; modeling the interactions of oceans with the atmosphere, sea ice and/or ice sheets; and dissemination of results through publications.

For GS-14, specialized experience is leading and performing physical oceanography research using in-situ or remotely sensed data; developing ocean models, including general circulation models, for studying the interactions of oceans with the atmosphere, sea ice and/or ice sheets; and dissemination of results through publications.

Basic Education Requirement: A bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with major study in Aeronautical Engineering, Aeronautics, Aerospace Engineering, Architecture, Astronautical Engineering, Astronautics, Astronomy, Astrophysics, Biomedical Engineering, Ceramic Engineering, Ceramics, Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, Civil Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science*, Life Science, Earth and Planetary Science, Electrical Engineering, Electronics Engineering, Geology, Geophysics, Industrial Engineering, Materials Engineering, Materials Science, Mathematics (Pure or Applied), Applied Mechanics, Engineering Mechanics, Mechanical Engineering, Metallurgical Engineering, Metallurgy, Meteorology, Nuclear Engineering, Nuclear Engineering Physics, Oceanography, Optical Engineering, Physics, Applied Physics, Engineering Physics, Space Science, Structural Engineering, Welding Engineering or other appropriate physical science or engineering field. Degrees in engineering technology are not considered to be qualifying for this position.

*Note: Curriculum must include 30 semester hours of course work in a combination of mathematics, statistics and computer science that provided in-depth knowledge of the following: (1) theoretical foundations and practical applications of computer science, including digital computer system architecture and system software organization, the representation and transformation of information structures and the theoretical models for such representations and transformations; and (2) essential mathematical and statistical techniques. Of the 30 semester hours, 15 must be in any combination of statistics and mathematics which includes differential and integral calculus.
