Job summary

NYU Langone Health is seeking a Research Nurse—per diem to provide comprehensive nursing care for adult and pediatric research participants in a diverse clinical trial setting. The role partners with the research team to direct and manage protocol activities with minimal supervision.

The ideal candidate holds a NYS RN license, has 3+ years in clinical nursing, and can navigate protocol requirements, consent, and patient education while ensuring protocol integrity and safety.

Qualifications

  • Valid NYS RN license with current registration.
  • Graduate of an accredited nursing program.
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing or equivalent education and experience with plans to earn a baccalaureate degree in Nursing.
  • Minimum of 3 years of related experience, preferably in a clinical RN setting.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint, Outlook) and internet applications.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills, strong analytical, organizational, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to interface effectively with all management levels and internal/external customers.
  • Ability to work independently and in a team, make decisions independently, and manage time, multitask, and prioritize work.
  • Ability to identify, analyze, and solve problems under pressure.
  • Preferred: Certification in a relevant practice area.

Responsibilities

  • Perform other duties as assigned.
  • Provide direct care to research patients using nursing process and protocol.
  • Demonstrate critical nursing judgment to maintain protocol integrity and patient safety.
  • Document effectively, observe patient status and protocol response, educate patients and families about the study.
  • Perform clinical skills for research protocols and assess situations for timely decisions.
  • Review protocol before patient entry and develop care plans with goals and outcomes.
  • Set priorities and communicate with the health-care team; collaborate and assist beyond the assignment.
  • Administer stock and research medications per policy; ensure protocol adherence.
  • Perform procedures per protocol including specimen collection, PK/PD, venous and central access, sedation, monitoring.
  • Assess patient and family educational needs regarding consent and interventions; document actions.
  • Participate in performance-improvement initiatives and CEUs.
  • Collaborate with CRC nurses nationwide via list service.

Position Summary

We have an exciting opportunity to join our team as a Research Nurse—per diem. The research nurse works to provide and maintain comprehensive nursing care to both adult and pediatric patients in a diverse clinical research setting. The standards of care for the research patient result from the ability to assess health‑care needs while ensuring compliance with protocol requirements. The senior research nurse collaborates with all members of the research team to effectively direct and manage all aspects of the research protocol with minimum supervision.

Job Responsibilities
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
  • Provide direct care to the research patient utilizing the nursing process with knowledge of the protocol purpose and methodology.
  • Demonstrate critical nursing judgment to maintain research protocol integrity without compromising patient safety and practice independently within study guidelines.
  • Document effectively, observe changes in patient status and protocol response, maintain communication at all times, and educate patients and families about the study and optimal health. Participate actively in the informed consent process.
  • Perform appropriate clinical skills for research protocols and assess situations to make timely critical decisions.
  • Review each protocol before patient entry and address questions with appropriate personnel. Create protocol flow sheets to summarize requirements for staff nurses. Develop, implement, and evaluate a plan of care for each patient, incorporating short‑ and long‑term goals and expected outcomes.
  • Set priorities based on patient care and protocol requirements and communicate effectively with the health‑care team. Work collaboratively and be willing to assist beyond the assignment.
  • Administer stock medication safely and with knowledge of hospital policy, as well as selective research medication with accountability and understanding of its effect within protocol domains and CRC guidelines.
  • Perform accurate and safe procedures within the scope of CRC Nursing, including specimen collection, PK/PD studies, venous and central access (excluding arterial lines), stimulation testing, blood product administration, fluid and research medication delivery, conscious sedation, bronchoscopy, and intensive vital‑sign monitoring for protocol or procedure–specific adverse effects.
  • Assess patient and family educational needs regarding informed consent, protocol interventions, and disease relationships; initiate teaching, document actions, and ensure continuity of care through discharge. Maintain patient rights and confidentiality with safety focus.
  • Participate in performance‑improvement initiatives, interdisciplinary education, and attend formal education outside the medical center (CEUs).
  • Collaborate with other CRC nurses nationally via list service, share research education, and demonstrate independent management of a clinical research protocol.
Minimum Qualifications

Pay Transparency

NYU Langone Health provides a salary range to comply with the New York state law on salary transparency. The salary range for this role is $52.04–$61.54 hourly. Actual salaries depend on experience, specialty, education, and hospital need. The listed range does not include bonuses, incentive pay, differential pay, or other compensation.
