Job Summary


The Research Financial Analyst (RFA) is responsible for financial oversight and analyses of research portfolios for assigned Principal Investigators in the department. They will develop and analyze budget plans, create monthly projections of expenses and balances to support decision making, which are consistent with the award terms and allow efficient administration to minimize audit risk.

The RFA uses advanced contracts and grants concepts to manage high volume and high complexity transactions and is responsible for complex analysis and coordination of the financial aspects of contracts, grants, gifts, endowment funds and other discretionary funds management for Principal Investigators (PIs), and their laboratories. Key aspects of the position include interfacing with the departmental finance team and leadership, UCSF Office of Research, UCSF Controller's Office, Supply Chain Management, UCSF Development Office, UCSF Human Resources Office and extramural and intramural sponsors. Review financial and administrative management requirements of research contract and grant proposals, awards, and / or transactions to ensure compliance with institutional and sponsor policies.

The RFA must be able to coordinate between multiple sites, institutions and investigators, and navigate complex funding agency guidelines. Skillful execution of a wide range of independent responsibilities, providing post-award support, general fund management, prioritizing and managing all aspects of the workflow are all key elements of this position.

The RFA's role is to ensure that the awards/funds of his/her assigned PIs are managed rigorously according to sponsor, UC and departmental requirements and following planning, budgeting and spending practices that are efficient and minimize audit risk. The RFA serves as the departmental representative supporting his/her assigned PIs and must show considerable independence in planning, budgeting, tracking down information and keeping detailed records of all financial transactions.

The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy.

Your placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF. For positions that are represented by a labor union, placement within the salary range will be guided by the rules in the collective bargaining agreement.

The salary range for this position is $69,700 - $149,900 (Annual Rate).

Required Qualifications


  • Bachelor's degree with a major in a related field and three years of experience in administrative analysis or operations research; or an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Demonstrated skills in pre- and post-award research administration, policies and procedures for federal, state and private grant mechanisms.
  • Has ability to independently gather required information, organize, and perform financial analysis assignments.
  • Ability to present information in a clear and concise manner both in writing and verbally.
  • Proven ability to use spreadsheet and database software for complex financial analysis, fiscal management and financial reports.
  • Proven Interpersonal skills with peers throughout the organization; service orientation; critical thinking; attention to detail; ability to multi-task in a high volume environment, organizational skills.
  • Ability to adapt to changing priorities.
  • Ability to function as a member of a team.


Preferred Qualifications


  • Thorough knowledge and understanding of internal control practices and their impact on protecting University resources.
  • Knowledge of basic, translational and clinical research.
