Job summary

NASA Glenn Research Center is seeking a Research Facility Electrician to perform journeyman electrical trades for the TFOME contract at the Sandusky facility. The role includes installation, maintenance, and repair of electrical systems in a research environment.

The successful candidate will have a state-approved apprenticeship, Journeyman certificate, and extensive field experience, with strong knowledge of electrical codes and blueprints.

Qualifications

  • Completion of a 4-year State approved apprenticeship with Journeyman Electrician certificate and 4+ years of electrical work, or 8+ years journeyman experience with 2 years of related instruction.
  • AS degree in Electrical Engineering Technology or graduation from a Vocational Trade School in Electrical Technology.
  • Familiarity with NEC, NFPA 70E, OSHA Standards, and electrical safety PPE.

Responsibilities

  • Perform electrical inspections for safe operation of power systems in a research facility.
  • Install and repair wiring, fixtures, power equipment, and machinery per codes and blueprints.
  • Install/control distribution apparatus including motors, relays, switches, and panel boards.
  • Route and connect power wiring, cables, conduit, and electrical apparatus per diagrams.
  • Diagnose and troubleshoot electrical circuits and equipment using testing instruments.
  • Test circuit continuity to ensure component safety and compatibility.
  • Measure, cut, bend, thread, assemble, and install conduit and related hardware.
  • Operate facility equipment such as cranes, bucket trucks, and lifts as needed.

Overview

The Test Facilities Operation, Maintenance and Engineering (TFOME) contract at the NASA Glenn Research Center, Neil A. Armstrong Test Facility in Sandusky, Ohio is searching for a Research Facility Electrician to perform a variety of journeyman electrical trade functions such as the installation, maintenance, or repair of equipment for the generation, distribution, or utilization of electric energy.

TFOME is dedicated to excellence in service and to providing outstanding technical opportunities for our employees. We specialize in providing engineering and technical services in the areas of aero/space propulsion and power test facilities to NASA Glenn Research Center.

Responsibilities
  • May provide electrical inspections for the safe condition and operation of electrical power systems within a research or test facility as required.
  • Install and repair wiring, electrical fixtures, power equipment, and components of machinery and equipment following electrical code, manuals, specifications, schematics, and blueprints.
  • Install and repair control and distribution apparatus, including motors, relays, switches, circuit-breaker panels, etc.
  • Install and connect power supply wiring, cables, conduit, and electrical apparatus for machines and equipment in facilities following diagrams, schematics, or blueprints.
  • Diagnose and resolve problems in electrical circuits, systems, and equipment using testing instruments and equipment.
  • Test continuity of circuits to ensure compatibility and safety of components using testing instruments.
  • Measure, cut, bend, thread, assemble, and install electrical conduit using rulers, measuring devices, hand tools, pipe threader, and conduit bender.
  • May operate facility overhead cranes, bucket trucks, man-lifts, forklifts, and portable cranes.
Qualifications

This individual must have:

  • Completion of a 4-year State approved apprenticeship program with a Journeyman Electricians certificate and 4 years of additional electrical industry work experience, or 8 years minimum of equivalent journeyman level electricians experience, with 2 years of related technical instruction training that is verifiable by training records or certificates.
  • Associate of Applied Science Degree in Electrical Engineering Technology, or graduate from a Vocational Trade School program in Electrical Technology.
  • Familiarity with electrical codes, and knowledge of the proper use of the NEC Handbook, NFPA 70E, Electrical Safety PPE, and OSHA Standards.
  • Familiarity with electrical systems, tools, equipment and instruments.
  • Ability to read electrical blueprints, drawings, and layouts, and use computers.
  • Good attention to detail and follow verbal and written instructions from engineering or supervision.
  • Ability to use own judgment and decisions to allow continuity of workflow.
  • Must be self‑motivated and a team player with good interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Must be able to organize time and assignments to properly prioritize efforts for maximum effectiveness.
