Job Summary

The Research Engineering Scientist Associate III will manage the Shimadzu Institute for Research Technologies – Center for Environmental, Forensics, and Material Science ( CEFMS ). Perform engineering and scientific duties requiring special qualifications and skills with wide latitude for independent action and decision. Responsible for complex or unusual research assignments requiring the development of new or improved techniques and procedures. Plans, schedules, and coordinates detailed phases of one or more parts of a research project. Devises new approaches to problems encountered. Supervises and assists in preparation of specifications. Assumes responsibility for acceptance or rejection of results achieved. Determines additional equipment required for the research project. Performs related duties as required.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Manages the daily operations of the laboratory, including overall organization and cleanliness, instrument schedules, billing of users, inventories of chemicals, supplies, and parts.
  • Trains users in the proper and safe operation of the instruments and provides assistance as needed.
  • Creates and maintains SOPs, user manuals, and training materials.
  • Maintains instruments, including required routine cleaning and preventative maintenance, troubleshooting and repairing failures, and working with vendors as needed to resolve problems.
  • Interacts with external users, analyzes submitted samples, develops new analysis methods, writes reports of results.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Master’s degree in a scientific or engineering field.
  • Five (5) years of laboratory research experience or an equivalent mix of education and relevant experience in similar role.
  • Experience in operating and maintaining instrumentation such as XRD , XRF , ICP , EPMA , SEM , LC-MS, GC-MS, TOC , MALDI .
Preferred Qualifications
  • Doctorate degree in a scientific or engineering field.
  • Three (3) years of laboratory research experience.
  • Experience with Shimadzu instruments.
  • Experience managing a shared instrumentation facility.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Thorough knowledge of laboratory instrumentation and analysis techniques.
  • Ability to maintain alertness and attention to ensure the safety of oneself and others.

  • Working conditions are considered acceptable, but occasionally involve working with hazardous equipment or materials.
  • Uniforms and/or personal protection equipment (furnished).
