Summary:

Meta is seeking Research Engineers to join Fundamental AI Research (FAIR). We are committed to advancing the field of artificial intelligence by making fundamental advances in technologies to help interact with and understand our world. We are seeking individuals who are passionate in solving systems challenges to sustainably accelerate our reach to human-level intelligence. Candidates will have an opportunity to make fundamental advances in systems and apply their ideas at an unprecedented scale. The mission of Meta FAIR's SysML research is to advance the state of AI through open science innovations. We explore, design, and build ML systems and infrastructures at scale with usability, efficiency, and sustainability as design principles. Some aspects of this role include enabling distributed training at an unprecedented scale through advancements and development in training library and authoring components, such as cuBLAS, cuDNN, FlashAttention, training performance acceleration through hardware-software co-design. You will have industry experience working on AI systems and Infrastructure related problems. The position will involve taking these skills and applying them to solve for some of the most crucial and exciting problems to enable scalable, efficient AI workloads.

Required Skills:

Research Engineer, SysML - FAIR Responsibilities:

1. Carry out cutting-edge research to advance the science and technology of machine learning systems.
2. Goal setting related to project impact, AI system design, and infrastructure/developer efficiency.
3. Define use cases, and develop methodology & benchmarks to evaluate different approaches.
4. Perform research that enables learning the semantics of data (images, video, text, audio, and other modalities).
5. Devise better data-driven models of AI system design and optimization.
6. Apply in depth knowledge of how the ML systems interacts with the other systems around it.
7. Contribute research that leads to innovations in: scalable machine learning systems, resource-efficient AI data and algorithm scaling and neural network architectures, memory and energy-efficient AI systems, environmentally-sustainable AI system and hardware designs.
8. Collaborate with researchers and cross-functional partners including communicating research plans, progress, and results.
9. Directly or influencing partners to deliver impact through detailed and thorough data-driven analysis.
10. Drive large efforts across multiple teams.
11. Publish research results and contribute to research that impacts Meta product development.
12. Mentor other engineers / research scientists & improve the quality of engineering work in the broader team.

Minimum Qualifications:

1. Specialized experience in one or more of the following machine learning/deep learning domains: Hardware accelerators architecture, GPU architecture, machine learning compilers, or ML systems, AI infrastructure, high performance computing, performance optimizations, or Machine learning frameworks (e.g. PyTorch), numerics and software/hardware co-design.
2. Master's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, a relevant technical field, and 6+ years of equivalent domain-specific industry experience.
3. Experience with Python, C++, C, Rust or other related languages and with PyTorch framework.
4. Experience developing and optimizing systems for at-scale machine learning execution.
5. Experience devising data-driven models and real-system experiments and design implementation for AI system optimization.
6. Experience with scalable machine learning systems, resource-efficient AI data and algorithm scaling, or neural network architectures.
7. Experience solving complex problems and comparing alternative solutions, tradeoffs, and diverse points of view to determine a path forward.
8. Experience working and communicating cross functionally in a team environment.

Preferred Qualifications:

1. PhD in the field of Computer Science, Computer Engineering, relevant technical field, or equivalent practical experience.
2. Proven track record of achieving significant results and publications as demonstrated by grants, fellowships, patents, as well as publications at leading workshops, journals or conferences such as MLSys, ISCA, ASPLOS, HPCA, PLDI, CGO, NeurIPS, ICML, ICLR, or similar.
3. Demonstrated research and software engineering experience via work experience, coding competitions, or widely used contributions in open source repositories (e.g. GitHub).
4. Experience with distributed systems or machine learning model / training algorithm development.
5. Technical leadership experience.

Public Compensation:

$85.10/hour to $251,000/year + bonus + equity + benefits.
