Job Title: Research Engineer (Physics) Location: Tallahassee, FL Regular/Temporary: Regular Full/Part Time: Full-Time Job ID: 61458 Department: Department of Physics, Florida State University College of Arts & Sciences

Responsibilities

This position serves as a subject matter expert for scientific instrument design, Electrical Discharge Machining (EDM), and ultra-high vacuum (UHV) components supporting the technical research engineering needs of the Department of Physics.

Responsibilities include:

  • Selecting and applying standard engineering techniques, procedures, and criteria in developing and/or modifying complex designs for the Department of Physics.
  • Providing complex mechanical and electro-mechanical design for one-of-a kind instrument components that cannot be obtained commercially. Performs Computer-Aided Design (CAD) for specialized research instrumentation developed in collaboration with faculty and staff.
  • Providing advanced expertise in the use of 3D printing technologies—including FDM (Fused Deposition Modeling), SLA (Stereolithography), and metal additive manufacturing—for the rapid and cost-effective production of custom prototypes, experimental fixtures, and specialized instrument components that cannot be readily obtained commercially.
  • Component repair, fabrication, and design for ultra-high vacuum (UHV) components utilizing TIG (Tungsten Inert Gas) and MIG (Metal Inert Gas) welding.
  • Subject matter expert for Electrical Discharge Machining (EDM) for small intricate parts, hard metals, and other materials that are difficult to machine by conventional methods.
  • Instructing lab users, including faculty, graduate students, and postdoctoral researchers, in the areas of materials, machining techniques, and fabrication methods.
Qualifications

A Bachelor's degree and two years of experience; or a high school diploma or equivalent and six years of experience. (Note: a combination of post high school education and experience equal to six years.)
