Job summary

Vanderbilt University’s Institute for Software Integrated Systems seeks a Research Engineer to help develop, integrate, and maintain discipline-specific software systems, web apps, and engineering tools to support project and research goals, reporting to the Principal Investigator.

You will collaborate with researchers, graduate students, and staff; contribute to cloud-enabled, AI-driven, and data-intensive applications; build and test backend and frontend components using modern frameworks.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in computer science or a related engineering discipline is required.
• Proficiency in Python, Julia, MATLAB or similar languages.
• Experience with cloud computing platforms (AWS, Azure, GCP).
• Experience with Docker.
• Ability to design and maintain backend and frontend software (React, FastAPI, Flask, Node.js).
• Familiarity with databases (MongoDB, PostgreSQL, Redis).
• Experience with modern software development environments, Git, and CI/CD pipelines.
• Ability to adapt in fast-paced research environments with evolving goals.
• Experience working in teams on research or development projects.

Responsibilities

• Assist with modeling and analysis of engineering problems.
• Design, develop, and maintain web-based applications, APIs, and interfaces supporting research goals.
• Assist with cloud development, deployment, and integration of AI-driven and data-intensive applications.
• Contribute to development and maintenance of software systems and engineering tools.
• Perform engineering and software design, testing, analysis, maintenance, or experimentation as directed.
• Prepare technical documentation for project deliverables.
