Job summary

The University of Minnesota Epilepsy Institute in the Department of Neurology seeks a Non-Registered Research EEG Technologist to support clinical research protocols and neurodiagnostic studies. About the Job

Position Summary: The Epilepsy Institute in the Department of Neurology is hiring a Non-Registered Research EEG Technologist (Research Professional 1) to support clinical research protocols and neurodiagnostic studies. Once competencies are evaluated, the technologist will perform electroencephalogram (EEG) monitoring, electrode application/repairs, data collection, and testing procedures for research participants as well as supporting our Registered Clinical EEG Technologists in our clinical epilepsy program. This will be a 3-year position with extensions available contingent on performance and availability of funding.

Teamwork and cross-collaboration are very important in this role as it will involve interactions with internal groups (e.g., Fairview, UMP, etc.). We welcome candidates with attention to detail who have excellent interpersonal communication skills. This is expected to be a mostly in-person position, with some work being able to be completed remotely. Primary work locations include the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities campus in Minneapolis, MN and at the University of Minnesota Physicians Minnesota Comprehensive Epilepsy Program in St. Louis Park, MN.

Work Schedule: In-person, specific work hours vary (40 hours a week), Monday - Friday with variable weekend work.

Duties/Responsibilities

Clinical Research EEG Support (50%)

• Prepare and perform clinical research electroencephalography (EEG) studies, including participant setup, recording acquisition, and data management of standard and complex electroencephalographic recordings and evoked potentials.
• Support EEG-related research activities for ongoing and future studies across the Department of Neurology.
• Perform sleep staging on research EEG recordings (upon completion of required training).

Clinical EEG Support (40%)

• Support clinical EEG and stereo-electroencephalography (SEEG) studies by assisting Registered EEG Technologists with setup and acquisition of recordings during SEEG monitoring admissions in the Epilepsy Monitoring Unit (EMU).
• Monitor participant respiration, heart rate, and brain activity during procedures while operating recording equipment.
• Maintain electrode recording quality throughout monitoring sessions and perform electrode repairs as needed.
• Strict adherence to safety standards, clinical practice guidelines, and HIPAA confidentiality policies.

Data Management, Review, & Analysis (5%)

• Assist with the organization, de-identification, and archiving of research EEG datasets.
• Scan long-term EEG recordings, annotate events, mark specific brain activity, and prepare summarized readings for interpretation by Principal Investigators and reviewing physicians.

Equipment Maintenance & Laboratory Operations (5%)

• Ensure availability and proper functioning of supplies, testing hardware, and neurodiagnostic equipment.
• Assemble, adjust, clean, and replenish testing instruments, supplies, and procedure rooms before and after participant sessions.
• Collaborate with research and clinical staff in evaluating new neurodiagnostic equipment and supplies.

Required Qualifications

• BA/BS degree in Neuroscience, Biology, Health Sciences, or a related scientific discipline, or a combination of education and relevant work experience to equal at least four years.
• Excellent interpersonal communication skills.
• High attention to detail.
• Basic Life Support (BLS) / CPR Certification.
• Willingness to complete an internal EEG training program and work toward eventual certification (e.g., R. EEG T).

Preferred Qualifications

• Basic computer skills in via Windows and Apple operating systems.
• Basic mathematical skills, organizational, and prioritization skills.
• Ability to work at multiple job sites as determined by department needs.
• Ability to work in the evenings and weekends.
• Strong interest in neurophysiology.
• Two years of relevant experience.
