The Department of Physiology and Cell Biology seeks a Research Associate to contribute to the planning, design, execution, and management of research projects in a foundational biological/health science laboratory investigating mitochondrial function and dysfunction, cardiac cell biology, and mechanisms of cardiac disease. Responsibilities include mitochondrial isolation, functional assays, measurements of mitochondrial redox state, reactive oxygen species (ROS) production and oxidative stress, mitochondrial electrophysiology, fluorescence and holographic microscopy, and electron microscopy image analysis. The laboratory experiments and performs advanced molecular, cellular, or other specialized techniques. Experience with mitochondrial isolation, functional assays, and measurements of mitochondrial redox state, ROS production, and oxidative stress is highly desirable. Experience with fluorescence microscopy and electron microscopy image analysis is preferred. Clinical training or a background in medicine, particularly with an interest in cardiovascular disease and mitochondrial pathophysiology, is preferred. Responsibilities include collecting, analyzing, and interpreting research data; assisting in the development and refinement of methodologies, experimental designs, sampling techniques, and analytical approaches; and establishing appropriate controls, criteria, and research standards. The Research Associate critically reviews relevant scientific literature, supports the preparation of manuscripts, reports, and presentations for national and international conferences, and contributes to project documentation. The role also assists the principal investigator in preparing grant proposals to secure new or renewal extramural funding. Additional duties include coordinating laboratory activities and work assignments for lab personnel; overseeing routine maintenance and testing of laboratory equipment; and performing other tasks as assigned to advance the research mission.
