Job summary

University of Houston seeks an experienced researcher to lead advanced experiments and analyses under faculty supervision. The role involves designing, operating, and evaluating complex studies across multiple disciplines, preparing reports, and contributing to grant-proposal development.

The candidate should mentor graduate and undergraduate researchers, maintain data and inventory control, and ensure adherence to safety and ethical guidelines. Internal UH candidates only.

Qualifications

  • Ph.D. degree with 3 years of experience.
  • Experience designing, operating and analyzing experiments.
  • Ability to prepare reports and scientific manuscripts.
  • Proficiency with cross-disciplinary concepts.
  • Strong project management and supervision skills.

Responsibilities

  • Ensures experiments or research efforts are performed according to specifications.
  • May make recommendations to changes in procedures, processes, or experimental design.
  • May prepare and/or edit research papers, proposals and reports.
  • Possesses advanced cross-disciplinary knowledge to develop new approaches.
  • Understands and uses effective management techniques.
  • Designs, operates and analyzes multiple large and/or complex experiments or research projects.
  • Reviews progress and liaises with other areas for support.
  • Defines procedures or processes to be used in the research investigations.
  • May personally conduct important and/or technically complex investigations.
  • Operates with wide latitude within policies and guidelines.
  • Provides direction and supervision of graduate and undergraduate research assistants.

Description:

Works under the direction of a faculty member. Provides expertise in the design, operation and analysis of experiments or research projects in areas such as chemistry, biology, psychology, sociology, mathematics, statistics, computer science, physics, optometry, all fields of engineering, etc. May prepare samples for testing. Performs advanced testing procedures and performs analyses of data. Prepares reports. Makes uses of a variety of specialized equipment typical within area of specialization. May contribute to grant proposal development.

  1. Ensures experiments or research efforts are performed according to specifications.

  3. May prepare and/or edit research papers, proposals and reports.
  4. Possesses, understands, and applies an advanced knowledge crossing fields of specialization to develop unique and new approaches or ideas.

  6. Designs, operates and analyzes multiple large and/or complex experiments or research projects.
  7. Reviews progress of projects. May serve as liaison with other areas of specialization to obtain support or technical expertise for projects.
  8. Defines procedures or processes to be used in the research investigations.

  10. Operates with wide latitude for unreviewed action subject only to institutional policies and guidelines and ethical considerations.
  11. Provides direction and supervision of graduate and undergraduate research assistants involved in experiments or research.
Additional Job Duties:
  • Mentor graduate and undergraduate students in conducting organic chemistry experiments.
  • Maintain a chemical inventory and interface with Environmental Health and Safety.
  • Maintain a data repository of chemical and biological data.
  • Conducting protein-small molecule conjugations and analytical analysis.

MQ: Ph.D. Degree with 3 years of experience.
