The Henry M. Jackson Foundation for the Advancement of Military Medicine (HJF) is seeking a Research Associate I for the Military Relevant Bacterial Diseases Department, within the Infectious Disease Directorate at the Naval Medical Research Command in Silver Spring, Maryland.

The role involves supporting animal studies, performing immunological techniques (ELISA, flow cytometry, cell culture), data collection and analysis, and contributing to technical reports and publications.

Qualifications

  • Master’s Degree in Biology, Immunology or a related scientific field.
  • Minimum of 0–2 years’ experience required.

Responsibilities

  • Participate in execution of approved animal use protocols to evaluate bacterial challenge doses and vaccines.
  • Perform immunological techniques including ELISA, flow cytometry, and cell culture.
  • Conduct laboratory research projects, including data collection, organization, and database maintenance.
  • Record detailed observations on experiments.
  • Maintain compliance with laboratory safety policies and procedures.
  • Contribute to technical reports, publications, and presentations for collaborators.
  • Follow SOPs and provide basic instruction to other lab staff.
  • Ensure proper disposal of infectious and hazardous materials.
  • Perform data organization, quality control, and basic statistical analyses.

Research Associate I

The Henry M. Jackson Foundation for the Advancement of Military Medicine (HJF) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to advancing military medicine. HJF serves military, medical, academic and government clients by administering, managing and supporting preeminent scientific programs that benefit members of the armed forces and civilians alike. Since its founding in 1983, HJF has served as a vital link between the military medical community and its federal and private partners. HJF’s support and administrative capabilities allow military medical researchers and clinicians to maintain their scientific focus and accomplish their research goals.

Position: Research Associate I – clinical or laboratory research in the Military Relevant Bacterial Diseases Department, located within the Infectious Disease Directorate at the Naval Medical Research Command in Silver Spring, Maryland.

Responsibilities
  • Participate in the execution of approved animal use protocols to evaluate bacterial challenge doses, enteric vaccines, and anti‑diarrheal prophylactics.
  • Perform immunological techniques, including ELISA, flow cytometry, and cell culture.
  • Conduct laboratory research projects, including data collection, organization, and database maintenance.
  • Record detailed observations on experiments.
  • Maintain compliance with established laboratory safety policies and procedures.
  • Contribute to technical reports, publications, and presentations for internal and external collaborators.
  • Follow instructions and standard operating procedures to perform expected tasks, and provide basic instruction to other lab staff when required.
  • Ensure proper disposal of infectious and hazardous materials.
  • Perform data organization, quality control, scientific review, and basic statistical analyses using common laboratory software.
  • Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned or directed by the supervisor, including attendance of required training for the role.
Qualifications
Education and Experience
  • Master’s Degree in Biology, Immunology or a related scientific field.
  • Minimum of 0–2 years’ experience required.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Previous experience with and willingness to work with small animal models.
  • Experience with small animal handling, accurate administration of agents, sample collection, and animal monitoring.
  • Experience with standard laboratory techniques, including immunological assays and bacterial culture techniques.
  • Ability to follow detailed instructions.
  • Strong attention to detail.
  • Good communication and analytical skills.
  • Requires obtaining and maintaining a T1/Public Trust background check.
Work Environment
  • This position will take place primarily in a laboratory setting.
Compensation
  • The annual salary range for this position is $52,800–$65,000. Actual salary will be determined based on experience, education, etc.
